How to Use

Dosage

Take one tablet (10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, or 80 mg) once daily. Your doctor will decide the right dose for you, usually starting with 10 mg, 20 mg, or sometimes 40 mg daily.

Method

Take the tablet in the evening, with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than 80 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or cramps that can be serious.
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., swelling of face/tongue/throat, muscle pain, rash, hives, sun sensitivity, fever, shortness of breath, lupus-like symptoms).
  • Liver problems (yellow skin/eyes, itching, dark urine, pale stools, tiredness, loss of appetite).
  • Pancreatitis (severe stomach pain).
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia).
  • Numbness or weakness in hands and feet.
  • Headache, dizziness, tingling sensation.
  • Digestive problems (stomach pain, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting).
  • Rash, itching, hair loss.
  • Weakness.
  • Memory loss, confusion.
  • Blurred vision, reduced vision.
  • Insomnia (trouble sleeping).
  • Impaired memory.
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) causing breathing difficulties or dizziness.
  • Rash or sores in the mouth.
  • Muscle rupture.
  • Gynecomastia (enlargement of breasts in men).
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Depression.
  • Lung inflammation causing breathing problems, persistent cough, and/or fever.
  • Tendon problems, sometimes with tendon rupture.
  • Myasthenia gravis (a disease causing muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing).
  • Ocular myasthenia (a disease causing weakness in eye muscles).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to simvastatin or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
  • Do not take with certain medicines for fungal infections, bacterial infections, HIV, hepatitis C, depression, or medicines like gemfibrozil, ciclosporin, or danazol.
  • If you need to take fusidic acid for a bacterial infection, you must temporarily stop Simvastatin Orion. Your doctor will tell you when it's safe to restart.
  • Do not take more than 40 mg of Simvastatin Orion if you are also taking lomitapide.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.4.2023)
