How to Use

Dosage

One Simvastatin Orion tablet (10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, or 80 mg) once a day.

Method

Take the tablet by mouth in the evening, with or without food. If you are taking a bile acid binding medicine, take Simvastatin Orion at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after that medicine.

Important

Do not take more than 80 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Severe muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or cramps (can lead to kidney damage or death)
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., swelling of face/tongue/throat, skin rash, itching, hives, sun sensitivity, fever, joint pain)
  • Liver problems (yellow skin/eyes, itching, dark urine, pale stools, tiredness, loss of appetite)
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas, often with severe stomach pain)
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)
  • Numbness, tingling, or weakness in arms and legs
  • Headache or dizziness
  • Digestive problems (e.g., stomach pain, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting)
  • Hair loss
  • Memory loss or confusion
  • Blurred or reduced vision
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Muscle rupture
  • Enlargement of male breasts (gynecomastia)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to simvastatin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
  • Do not take this medicine with certain other medicines for fungal infections, bacterial infections, HIV, hepatitis C, depression, or if you are taking gemfibrozil, ciclosporin, danazol, or cobicistat.
  • If you have used a medicine containing fusidic acid (for bacterial infections) orally or by injection in the last 7 days, do not take Simvastatin Orion. Combining these can cause serious muscle problems.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. These symptoms can be serious and, in rare cases, lead to kidney damage or death. The risk is higher with the 80 mg dose.

  • If you have myasthenia (general muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness), statins can sometimes worsen these conditions. Discuss with your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.4.2023)
