How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your dose. Adults usually start with 10-40 mg daily, and children (10-17 years) start with 10 mg in the evening.

Method

Take one tablet once a day in the evening, with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than 80 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or cramps.
  • Swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, which can cause breathing problems (allergic reaction).
  • Severe muscle pain, often in the shoulders and hips.
  • Rash with weakness in arm, leg, and neck muscles.
  • Joint pain or inflammation.
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis).
  • Unusual bruising, rash, and swelling, hives, sensitivity to light, fever, redness.
  • Shortness of breath and a general feeling of illness.
  • Lupus-like symptoms (rash, joint pain, blood changes).
  • Liver inflammation with yellowing of the skin or eyes, itching, dark urine, pale stools, tiredness, weakness, or loss of appetite.
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), often with severe stomach pain.
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia).
  • Numbness or weakness in hands and feet.
  • Headache, tingling sensation, dizziness.
  • Blurred vision and impaired eyesight.
  • Digestive problems (abdominal pain, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting).
  • Rash, itching, and hair loss.
  • Weakness.
  • Insomnia (difficulty sleeping).
  • Memory problems, memory loss, confusion.
  • Severe allergic reaction with breathing problems or dizziness (anaphylaxis).
  • Rash or sores in the mouth (lichenoid drug eruption).
  • Muscle rupture.
  • Gynecomastia (breast enlargement in men).
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Depression.
  • Lung inflammation causing breathing difficulties, including persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever.
  • Tendon problems, sometimes with tendon rupture.
  • Myasthenia gravis (a disease causing general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles).
  • Ocular myasthenia (a disease causing weakness in eye muscles).
  • Sleep problems, including nightmares.
  • Sexual problems.
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, high blood fats, are overweight, or have high blood pressure).
  • Persistent muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness that may not go away after stopping the medicine.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to simvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, as some can affect this medicine or increase side effects.
  • Avoid heavy alcohol use while taking this medicine.

  • Tell your doctor if you are having surgery, as you may need to stop this medicine temporarily.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had myasthenia (a muscle weakness condition).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, as this can be serious.
  • Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.4.2023)
