How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 50 mg once a day, but your doctor might change it.

Method

You can take this medicine with or without food, once a day, either in the morning or in the evening.

Important

The maximum dose you can take is 200 mg per day.

  • Yellow skin or eyes (sign of liver problems)
  • Seizures
  • Manic mood (feeling overly excited or energetic)
  • Feeling restless and needing to move (akathisia)
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Low salt in your blood
  • Increased risk of bone fractures
  • Lockjaw
  • Bedwetting
  • Inflammation of the large intestine
  • Very heavy vaginal bleeding right after childbirth

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to sertraline or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine with certain other antidepressants called MAOIs, or with linezolid or pimozide. You must wait a specific time between stopping one medicine and starting the other.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or taking your own life, contact your doctor or go to a hospital right away.
  • If you have epilepsy or have had seizures before, tell your doctor. Contact your doctor immediately if you have a seizure while taking this medicine.
  • Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.

  • Children and teenagers under 18 should only take this medicine for OCD, and doctors will monitor them closely.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Serotonergic. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 12.2.2024)
