How to Use

Dosage

For adults with depression and OCD, the usual dose is 50 mg daily. For panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and PTSD, start with 25 mg daily, then increase to 50 mg daily after one week.

Method

Take this medicine once daily, with or without food, either in the morning or in the evening.

Important

The recommended maximum daily dose is 200 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, tiredness
  • Nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, upset stomach, constipation, vomiting, stomach pain, flatulence
  • Anxiety, agitation, restlessness, nervousness, nightmares, teeth grinding, tremors
  • Muscle pain, stiffness, muscle movement problems (e.g. increased movement, difficulty walking)
  • Decreased sexual interest, ejaculation failure, erectile dysfunction, irregular periods
  • Increased sweating, rash
  • Feeling unwell, chest pain, fever, weight gain, injuries
RARE
  • Severe skin reactions (e.g., blistering rash, Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Serious allergic reaction (e.g., itchy rash, breathing difficulties, swelling of face or eyelids)
  • Yellow skin or eyes (signs of liver damage)
  • Suicidal thoughts or behavior
  • Seizures or fits
  • Manic episodes (feeling overly excited or energetic)
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Changes in heart rhythm or slow heart rate
  • Low sodium levels in the blood
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • Jaw stiffness (lockjaw)
  • Bedwetting
  • Partial vision loss
  • Severe vaginal bleeding shortly after childbirth

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to sertraline or any of its other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or pimozide. Tell your doctor if you have used these medicines.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or feel your depression or anxiety worsening at the start of treatment, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you experience symptoms such as agitation, confusion, fever, diarrhea, increased sweating, or a fast heartbeat, contact your doctor immediately (these could be signs of serotonin syndrome).
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of epilepsy, seizures, or bipolar disorder. If you experience a seizure or symptoms of mania, contact your doctor immediately.

  • Discuss with your doctor if you have liver, heart, or bleeding problems, or if you are taking blood-thinning medications.
  • This medicine is generally not recommended for individuals under 18 years old, except for the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice during treatment. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Serotonergic. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 12.2.2024)
