Seroxat is a medicine for adults that helps treat depression and anxiety by increasing the level of a natural chemical called serotonin in the brain.

How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you your exact dose, but it is usually 20 mg once a day. The dose can be slowly increased by 10 mg at a time.

Method

Take the tablets whole with water in the morning with food. Do not chew them.

Important

The highest daily dose is 60 mg. For depression, social anxiety, PTSD, or generalized anxiety, the maximum is 50 mg. For patients over 65, the maximum is 40 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Changes in sexual desire or function (e.g., problems with orgasm or ejaculation)
  • Higher cholesterol levels in your blood
  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping (insomnia) or feeling very sleepy
  • Unusual dreams, including nightmares
  • Dizziness or shaking (tremors)
  • Headache
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling restless
  • Unusual weakness
  • Blurred vision
  • Yawning or dry mouth
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Vomiting
  • Weight gain
  • Sweating
RARE
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding, including blood in vomit or stools
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Temporary changes in blood pressure, causing dizziness when standing up quickly
  • Faster than normal heartbeat
  • Stiffness, shaking, or abnormal movements of the mouth or tongue
  • Dilated pupils
  • Skin rashes or itching
  • Feeling confused or seeing/hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations)
  • Inability to hold urine (incontinence)
  • Worsening blood sugar control in diabetic patients
  • Decrease in the number of white blood cells
  • Seizures
  • Feeling restless and unable to sit or stand still (akathisia)
  • Feeling tired, weak, or confused with muscle pain/stiffness due to low sodium in your blood
  • Production of breast milk in men and women
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Liver problems that can make your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow
  • Panic attacks
  • Overactive behavior or thoughts (mania)
  • Feeling like you are outside your own body (depersonalization)
  • Agitation
  • Uncontrollable urge to move your legs (restless legs syndrome)
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Menstrual problems (e.g., heavy or irregular bleeding, bleeding between periods, no periods)
  • Fluid retention (swelling in hands or feet)
  • Sensitivity to sunlight
  • Painful, prolonged erection that does not go away
  • Low number of platelets in your blood
  • Inflammation of the large intestine (colitis) causing diarrhea
  • Teeth grinding
  • Ringing or other persistent noises in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Increased risk of bone fractures

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Seroxat if you are allergic to paroxetine or any other ingredient in this medicine. Do not take it if you are taking or have recently taken MAO inhibitors (another type of antidepressant) in the last two weeks, or if you are taking thioridazine or pimozide (medicines for mental illness).
  • Seroxat should not be given to children or young people under 18 years old.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking Seroxat as it can make your symptoms or side effects worse.
  • Do not drive or use machines if you feel dizzy, confused, very tired, or have blurred vision.

  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact a doctor or hospital right away.
  • Get medical help right away if you have symptoms like extreme agitation, confusion, sweating, shaking, stiff muscles, or a fast heartbeat. These could be signs of a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney, liver, or heart problems, epilepsy, glaucoma, or diabetes, or if you are taking other medications like blood thinners or tamoxifen.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Serotonergic. Consider another SSRI antidepressant for primary treatment. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider potential significant interactions, especially with other drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 12.2.2024)
