How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your starting dose, and the daily dose will be between 150 mg and 800 mg, depending on your condition.

Method

Take tablets once a day. Do not break, chew, or crush them; swallow whole with water. Take without food, at least 1 hour before a meal or at bedtime, as advised by your doctor.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 800 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness (can lead to falls), headache, dry mouth
  • Sleepiness (can lead to falls, may go away with continued use)
  • Weight gain
  • Abnormal muscle movements (difficulty starting movements, shaking, restlessness, muscle stiffness without pain)
  • Swelling of breasts and unexpected milk production in men and women, missed or irregular periods in women
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Pounding or racing heartbeat
  • Constipation, upset stomach
  • Weakness
  • Swelling in arms or legs
  • Low blood pressure (especially when standing up), causing dizziness or faintness (can lead to falls)
  • High blood sugar
  • Blurred vision
  • Abnormal dreams, nightmares
  • Increased appetite
  • Irritability
  • Speech problems
  • Shortness of breath
  • Vomiting (especially in the elderly)
  • Fever
RARE
  • Seizures (epileptic fits)
  • Allergic reactions (hives, swelling of skin and around the mouth)
  • Restless legs syndrome (uncomfortable feeling in legs)
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Uncontrolled movements (especially of the face or tongue)
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Slower than normal heart rate (especially at start of treatment, with low blood pressure and fainting)
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Fainting (can lead to falls)
  • Stuffy nose
  • High fever, sweating, severe muscle stiffness, very drowsy or weak (a serious condition called Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome)
  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Long-lasting and painful erection (priapism)
  • Blood clots, especially in the legs (swelling, pain, redness) which can travel to the lungs, causing chest pain and breathing problems.
  • Sleepwalking, sleep talking, sleep eating, or other sleep activities.
  • Lower body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Fever, flu-like symptoms, sore throat or other infection with very low white blood cells (agranulocytosis)
  • Bowel blockage
  • Severe rash, blisters, or red spots on the skin (severe skin reactions)
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock) causing breathing difficulties or collapse
  • Sudden swelling of the skin (usually around eyes, lips, or throat) (angioedema)
  • Abnormal release of a hormone that controls urine volume
  • Muscle damage and pain (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Stroke
  • Heart muscle disease (cardiomyopathy)
  • Heart muscle inflammation (myocarditis)
  • Inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis), often with red or purple skin rash.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to quetiapine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take with certain medicines for HIV, fungal infections, other infections (erythromycin, clarithromycin), or depression (nefazodone).
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, like an irregular heartbeat.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
  • Seroquel Prolong should not be used by children or teenagers under 18 years old.

  • Do not drink grapefruit juice while taking Seroquel Prolong, as it can affect how the medicine works.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, even if you feel better, without talking to your doctor first. Stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms.
  • If you feel depressed or have thoughts of harming yourself, contact your doctor or hospital right away.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Anticholinergic. Sedative. For treatment of psychosis only. Inappropriate as a hypnotic. Increases the risk of cardiovascular events, QT prolongation and orthostatic hypotension. Increases risk of falls, extrapyramidal symptoms and cognitive impairment. Reduces the effectiveness of drugs for Alzheimer’s disease. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 15.1.2024)
