Seronil

Seronil is an SSRI medicine used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bulimia nervosa in adults, and moderate to severe depression in children and adolescents aged 8 and older.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 20 mg daily, but it can vary depending on your condition. For children aged 8 and older, the starting dose for depression is 10 mg daily.

Method

Take with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not chew capsules. Tablets can be divided.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 60 mg.

RARE
  • Thoughts of harming yourself or suicide (see warnings)
  • Uncontrolled or involuntary movements
  • Memory problems
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nosebleeds
  • Bleeding from your stomach or intestines (e.g., bloody stools)
  • Hair loss
  • Severe allergic reaction (e.g., swelling, trouble breathing)
  • Seizures or fits
  • Serotonin syndrome (fever, fast heart rate, stiff muscles - see warnings)
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Liver inflammation

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking Seronil and seek urgent medical help if you get a rash, itching, swollen lips or face, or trouble breathing. These could be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • Do not take Seronil if you are currently taking or have recently taken other medicines called MAOIs, as this can cause dangerous side effects.
  • Contact your doctor or go to the hospital right away if you have symptoms like unexplained fever, fast heart rate, sweating, stiff muscles or shaking, confusion, or extreme restlessness. These could be signs of a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.
  • If you have depression or anxiety, you might sometimes think about hurting yourself or ending your life. These thoughts can get stronger when you first start this medicine. If you have such thoughts, contact your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had periods of very high energy or mania. If you start to feel manic while taking Seronil, contact your doctor right away.

  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of bleeding problems or if you get bruises easily, as Seronil can increase the risk of bleeding.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking Seronil. There are potential risks to the baby, and the medicine passes into breast milk.
  • Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy or a history of seizures. If you have a seizure or if seizures become more frequent, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart problems, including conditions that make you prone to an irregular heartbeat.
  • This medicine can cause sexual problems, and these symptoms may sometimes continue after you stop taking it.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Serotonergic. A long-acting. After discontinuation, the effect lasts for several weeks. Significant adverse effects include insomnia, headache, dizziness, nausea, tachycardia and low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 12.2.2024)
