Seronil

Seronil is a medicine (an SSRI antidepressant) used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bulimia nervosa in adults, and moderate to severe depression in children aged 8 and older.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 20 mg once a day. For children aged 8 and older, the starting dose is 10 mg once a day.

Method

Take tablets or capsules with a glass of water, with or without food. Do not chew the capsules.

Important

Do not take more than 60 mg in one day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea, nausea
  • Tiredness, weakness
  • Decreased appetite, weight loss
  • Anxiety
  • Dry mouth
  • Increased need to urinate
RARE
  • Suicidal thoughts and behavior
  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing)
  • Seizures
  • Serotonin syndrome (fever, tremors, confusion, rapid heart rate)
  • Heart rhythm disorders
  • Liver inflammation, abnormal liver function tests
  • Low sodium in blood
  • Agitation, mania

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Seronil if you are allergic to fluoxetine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Seronil if you are taking or have recently taken certain other antidepressants called MAO inhibitors. Wait at least 2 weeks after stopping MAO inhibitors before starting Seronil, and 5 weeks after stopping Seronil before starting MAO inhibitors.
  • Do not take Seronil if you are taking metoprolol for heart failure.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems or an irregular heartbeat.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience fever, muscle stiffness, shaking, confusion, or extreme restlessness, as these could be signs of a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.

  • Tell your doctor if you bruise easily or have had bleeding problems.
  • Inform your doctor if you have epilepsy or have had seizures. If seizures occur more often, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or committing suicide, contact your doctor immediately or go to the hospital.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Serotonergic. A long-acting. After discontinuation, the effect lasts for several weeks. Significant adverse effects include insomnia, headache, dizziness, nausea, tachycardia and low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 12.2.2024)
