How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take. For depression, it's usually 20 mg once a day. For panic disorder, you start with 10 mg daily for one week, then increase to 20-30 mg daily. Elderly patients usually take 10-20 mg daily. Patients with liver problems should not take more than 20 mg daily.

Method

Take it once a day, with or without food. Swallow the tablets whole with water. Do not chew them as they taste bitter.

Important

Do not take more than 40 mg per day. If you are over 65 or have liver problems, do not take more than 20 mg per day.

  • Skin being sensitive to sunlight

  • Difficulty starting urination, or reduced urination

  • Swelling in arms or legs
  • Severe seizures (grand mal)
  • Movements you can't control
  • Changes in how things taste
  • Unusual bleeding
  • Liver inflammation
  • Fever
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
  • Low blood potassium
  • Teeth grinding
  • Unusual muscle movements or stiffness
  • Movement disorders
  • Blurred vision or other eye problems
  • Dizziness when standing up due to low blood pressure
  • Nosebleeds
  • Bleeding in the gut
  • Irregular or continuous uterine bleeding between periods
  • Painful erections
  • Increased prolactin hormone in blood
  • Milk secretion in men and non-breastfeeding women
  • Abnormal liver function tests
  • Increased risk of bone fractures

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Sepram if you are allergic to citalopram or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take Sepram with certain other medicines called MAO inhibitors or heart rhythm medicines. Tell your doctor about all your medications.
  • Sepram can cause thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, especially when starting treatment or if you are under 25. Talk to your doctor immediately if you have these thoughts.
  • Be careful if you have an abnormal heart rhythm, heart disease, diabetes, epilepsy, bleeding problems, or low sodium levels.
  • Sepram should not be used in children or adolescents under 18 years of age.

  • This medicine can make you feel dizzy or sleepy. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
  • Do not use Sepram during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor says it's absolutely necessary.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Serotonergic. Risk of QT prolongation. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider potential interactions especially with preparations that increase risk of bleeding. (updated 12.2.2024)
