Selexid is an antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections, such as bladder or urethra infections, by killing the bacteria that cause them.

How to Use

Dosage

Typically, one 200 mg tablet three times a day for acute bladder infection. For severe infections, your doctor might recommend one 400 mg tablet three times a day. For children over 6 years old and under 40 kg: 20-40 mg/kg per day, divided into three doses.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with at least half a glass of water or other drink. Avoid taking just before bedtime. Food does not affect the absorption of the medicine.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 1200 mg.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Selexid if you are allergic to pivmecillinam, any other ingredients in this medicine, or other antibiotics like penicillin.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had a severe skin rash, peeling skin, blisters, or sores in your mouth after taking Selexid or similar antibiotics.
  • Do not take Selexid if you have problems with your food pipe (esophagus) or other digestive issues that make it hard for food to pass.
  • Do not take Selexid if you have a known problem with your body's metabolism that affects carnitine or makes your blood or urine too acidic.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking Selexid if you are taking medicine for epilepsy (like valproic acid) or if you have a rare blood condition called porphyria.

  • Stop taking Selexid and get medical help right away if you get a severe skin rash, high fever, swollen glands, or peeling skin (these are signs of a very serious allergic reaction).
  • Contact your doctor right away if you get severe diarrhea during treatment. This could be a sign of a serious problem with your colon.
  • If you take Selexid just before giving birth, it might affect certain tests for newborn babies. Be sure to tell your doctor if you take this medicine close to your delivery date.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. May potentiate the effect of methotrexate. (updated 6.11.2023)
