How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose. For adults, usually one 200 mg tablet three times a day. For severe infections, one 400 mg tablet three times a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with at least half a glass of water or other drink. Do not take them just before going to bed.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 1200 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Vaginal yeast infection
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction (symptoms like sudden rash, swelling of face, lips, tongue, and/or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, fainting due to hypersensitivity)
  • Severe skin reactions (red target-like spots, peeling skin, blisters, sores in mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes, often preceded by fever)
  • Widespread rash, high body temperature, swollen lymph nodes (DRESS syndrome or drug hypersensitivity syndrome)
  • Inflammation of the large intestine (colitis)
  • Low platelet count
  • Decreased carnitine levels
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Vomiting

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to pivmecillinam, penicillin, or other similar antibiotics.
  • Stop taking Selexid and see a doctor right away if you get a severe skin rash, peeling skin, blisters, or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, genitals, or eyes.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe diarrhea during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you have issues with your esophagus (gullet) or a metabolic disorder that affects carnitine levels or causes high acid levels in your blood or urine.
  • If you take Selexid just before childbirth, tell your doctor, as it might affect newborn screening tests.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. May potentiate the effect of methotrexate. (updated 6.11.2023)
