How to Use
Dosage
Your doctor will tell you the exact dose. For adults, usually one 200 mg tablet three times a day. For severe infections, one 400 mg tablet three times a day.
Method
Swallow the tablets whole with at least half a glass of water or other drink. Do not take them just before going to bed.
Important
The maximum daily dose is 1200 mg.
Possible Side Effects
COMMON
- •Vaginal yeast infection
- •Diarrhea

RARE
- •Severe allergic reaction (symptoms like sudden rash, swelling of face, lips, tongue, and/or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, fainting due to hypersensitivity)
- •Severe skin reactions (red target-like spots, peeling skin, blisters, sores in mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes, often preceded by fever)
- •Widespread rash, high body temperature, swollen lymph nodes (DRESS syndrome or drug hypersensitivity syndrome)
- •Inflammation of the large intestine (colitis)
- •Low platelet count
- •Decreased carnitine levels
- •Headache
- •Dizziness
- •Vertigo
- •Vomiting
- •Stomach pain
- •Digestive problems
- •Esophageal ulcers

Important Warnings
- Do not take if you are allergic to pivmecillinam, penicillin, or other similar antibiotics.
- Stop taking Selexid and see a doctor right away if you get a severe skin rash, peeling skin, blisters, or sores in your mouth, throat, nose, genitals, or eyes.
- Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe diarrhea during treatment.
- Tell your doctor if you have issues with your esophagus (gullet) or a metabolic disorder that affects carnitine levels or causes high acid levels in your blood or urine.
- If you take Selexid just before childbirth, tell your doctor, as it might affect newborn screening tests.
Use in Elderly Patients
Category C
Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Increase the dosing interval in moderately severe renal impairment. May potentiate the effect of methotrexate. (updated 6.11.2023)
