How to Use

Dosage

Take one Salofalk 1g tablet three times a day (morning, midday, and evening), or as your doctor instructs.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth, 1 hour before meals. Swallow them whole without chewing with plenty of fluid. If you find it difficult to swallow, ask your doctor for another form of mesalazine.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually three Salofalk 1g tablets (3g) for adults. For children, the total dose should not exceed the adult maximum.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Skin rash, itching
RARE
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, feeling sick (nausea), indigestion, gas (flatulence), feeling unwell, vomiting
  • Severe stomach pain due to sudden inflammation of the pancreas
  • Changes in liver or pancreas enzyme levels in blood tests
  • Dizziness
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice) or stomach pain due to liver or bile duct problems
  • Increased skin sensitivity to sunlight
  • Joint pain
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Numbness and tingling in hands and feet (nerve problems)
  • Shortness of breath, cough, wheezing, or shadows on lung X-rays due to allergic or inflammatory lung conditions
  • Hair loss and baldness
  • Muscle pain
  • Temporary decrease in sperm production
  • Widespread allergic reactions like skin rash, fever, joint pain, breathing difficulties, or severe diarrhea and stomach pain from widespread colon inflammation.
  • Feeling very unwell with fever, sore throat, or mouth sores; this could be due to changes in blood cells, leading to infections, unusual bleeding, bruising, or feeling tired and pale.
  • Severe skin reactions with red, flat, target-like spots, blisters, skin peeling, sores in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes, widespread rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes; these can start with flu-like symptoms.
  • Shortness of breath, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or swelling in arms or legs, which might be signs of heart sensitivity reactions.
  • Kidney problems, like changes in urine color or amount, swollen arms or legs, or sudden pain in the side (from kidney stones).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Salofalk 1g tablets if you are allergic to mesalazine, salicylic acid, salicylates (like aspirin), or any other ingredients in this medicine, or if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had lung problems before, especially if you have asthma.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever been allergic to sulfasalazine (a medicine similar to mesalazine).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have liver problems or kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had a severe skin rash, skin peeling, blisters, or mouth sores after using mesalazine.

  • Your doctor may ask you to have regular blood and urine tests during your treatment.
  • Kidney stones can form. Symptoms can include pain in your side and blood in your urine. Drink plenty of fluids during treatment.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you get any severe skin reactions, such as widespread rash, fever, or blisters.
