How to Use

Dosage

Take one 3000 mg sachet once daily, ideally in the morning.

Method

Place the granules on your tongue and swallow them whole with plenty of liquid. Do not chew the granules.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 3000 mg of mesalazine (one sachet) per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Rash, itching
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, indigestion, gas, malaise, and vomiting
  • Severe stomach pain due to pancreas inflammation
  • Changes in liver or pancreas enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
RARE
  • Dizziness
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice) or stomach pain due to liver or bile problems
  • Increased skin sensitivity to sunlight
  • Joint pain
  • Feeling of weakness or tiredness
  • Numbness or tingling in arms and legs (nerve problems)
  • Shortness of breath, cough, or wheezing due to allergic or inflammatory lung conditions
  • Hair loss
  • Muscle pain
  • Reversible decrease in sperm production (can affect male fertility)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to mesalazine, aspirin-like medicines (salicylates), or any other ingredients in Salofalk.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking Salofalk if you have had lung problems, especially asthma.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking Salofalk if you have been sensitive to sulfasalazine (a medicine similar to mesalazine).
  • Stop using the medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you develop severe skin reactions, such as a spreading rash, blisters, or peeling skin.

  • Drink plenty of fluids during treatment, as kidney stones can form. Symptoms include pain in the sides of your stomach or blood in your urine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Remember blood tests to monitor safety. (updated 20.5.2024)
