How to Use

Dosage

One Salofalk 4 g/60 ml rectal suspension (4 g mesalazine) once daily at bedtime during an acute inflammation.

Method

This medicine is for rectal use only. Shake the bottle well for at least 30 seconds before use. Lie on your left side with your left leg straight and your right leg bent. Insert the applicator tip deeply into the rectum towards your navel. Tilt the bottle slightly downwards and slowly squeeze out the contents. Remain in this position for at least 30 minutes, preferably overnight, for best results. Do not swallow.

Important

The maximum daily dose is one Salofalk 4 g/60 ml rectal suspension (4 g mesalazine).

  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice) or stomach pain due to liver or bile duct problems
  • Hair loss, baldness
  • Numbness and tingling in hands and feet (nerve damage)
  • Temporary decrease in sperm production
  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, fever, joint pain, breathing difficulties, or severe diarrhea and stomach pain due to colon inflammation)
  • Severe skin reactions (red, flat, target-like spots, blisters, peeling skin, sores in mouth/throat/nose/genitals/eyes, widespread rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes)
  • Heart problems (shortness of breath, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, swelling in arms and legs)
  • Kidney problems (changes in urine color or amount, swollen arms/legs, sudden side pain due to kidney stones)
  • Blood disorders (sudden severe worsening of health with fever, sore throat/mouth, unexplained bleeding, purple spots, anemia)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to mesalazine, salicylic acid, or other similar substances (like Aspirin), or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had lung problems, especially asthma.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have ever developed a severe skin rash, peeling skin, or mouth sores after using mesalazine.

  • Kidney stones can form. Drink plenty of fluids during treatment.
  • This medicine contains potassium metabisulphite, which may rarely cause severe allergic reactions and difficulty breathing.
  • This medicine contains sodium benzoate, which may cause local irritation.
