Salofalk suppositories contain mesalazine, an anti-inflammatory medicine used to treat mild to moderate inflammation in the rectum, such as ulcerative colitis or proctitis.

How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is one 1 gram Salofalk suppository once daily, in the evening before bedtime.

Method

Insert the suppository into the rectum. Do not take by mouth.

The maximum daily dose is one 1 gram suppository.

Possible Side Effects

  • Increased skin sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity)
  • Severe stomach pain due to sudden inflammation of the pancreas
  • Shortness of breath, cough, wheezing, or shadows on lung X-rays due to allergic or inflammatory lung conditions
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Jaundice (yellow skin/eyes) or stomach pain due to liver disease or disturbed bile flow
  • Hair loss and baldness
  • Numbness and tingling in hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy)
  • Temporary reduction in sperm production
  • Generalized allergic reactions such as rash, fever, joint pain, difficulty breathing, or severe diarrhea and stomach pain from generalized colitis
  • Severe worsening of general health, especially with fever and/or sore throat or mouth, which may indicate issues with blood cells (low white blood cells, aplastic anemia, or thrombocytopenia) leading to infection, unexplained bleeding, purple spots under the skin, or anemia
  • Severe skin rashes including reddish, target-like or ring-shaped patches, often with blisters in the center, peeling skin, and sores in the mouth, throat, nose, genital area, and eyes, along with widespread rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes
  • Shortness of breath, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or swelling of limbs, which may indicate heart hypersensitivity reactions
  • Kidney problems, such as changes in urine color or amount, swollen limbs, or sudden flank pain caused by kidney stones

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to mesalazine, salicylates (like aspirin), or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have lung problems, especially asthma.
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to sulfasalazine, a substance similar to mesalazine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.

  • Stop using this medicine and see a doctor immediately if you get severe skin rashes, peeling skin, blisters, or mouth sores.
  • Drink plenty of fluids during treatment to help prevent kidney stones.
  • Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking blood thinners (like warfarin) or medicines for immune system diseases (like azathioprine).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C
