How to Use

Dosage

For adults, typically take 3 sachets of 1000 mg once daily for acute phases, or 1 sachet of 500 mg three times daily for preventing relapses. Children's dosage is weight-dependent and should be determined by a doctor.

Method

Take by mouth. Do not chew the granules. Place the granules on your tongue and swallow them whole with plenty of liquid.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is typically 3g. For children, the maximum is 75 mg per kg of body weight per day, but should not exceed the adult maximum dose.

Possible Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Rash, itching
RARE
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, gas, feeling unwell, vomiting
  • Severe abdominal pain due to acute pancreas inflammation
  • Changes in liver or pancreatic enzyme values
  • Dizziness
  • Yellow skin or abdominal pain due to liver disease or impaired bile flow
  • Increased skin sensitivity to sunlight (photosensitivity)
  • Joint pain
  • Feeling of weakness or tiredness
  • Numbness and tingling in hands and feet (peripheral neuropathy)
  • Shortness of breath, cough, wheezing, or lung problems due to allergic and/or inflammatory conditions
  • Hair loss or baldness
  • Muscle pain
  • Reversible decrease in sperm production
  • General allergic reactions such as severe rash, fever, joint pain, breathing difficulties, or severe diarrhea and stomach pain
  • Significant worsening of general health (with fever/sore throat/mouth), possibly due to low white blood cells (agranulocytosis), or other blood cell issues (aplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia) leading to bleeding, red spots under skin, or anemia (fatigue, paleness)
  • Severe skin reactions with red, flat, target-like or ring-shaped patches (with blisters, skin peeling, sores in mouth/throat/nose/genitals/eyes), widespread rash, fever, enlarged lymph nodes (preceded by flu-like symptoms)
  • Shortness of breath, chest pain, irregular heartbeat or limb swelling, possibly indicating heart hypersensitivity
  • Kidney problems, such as changes in urine color or amount, limb swelling, or sudden flank pain (due to kidney stones)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to mesalazine, salicylates (like aspirin), or any other ingredients in Salofalk.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had lung problems, especially asthma.
  • Tell your doctor if you have previously been very sensitive to medicines containing sulfasalazine.
  • Stop taking Salofalk and see a doctor immediately if you develop severe skin reactions like rash, peeling skin, blisters, or mouth sores.
