Salofalk is an anti-inflammatory medicine used to treat acute flare-ups of ulcerative colitis and to prevent them from returning.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children over 40 kg: for acute flare-ups, take 3-6 sachets once daily in the morning, or 1-2 sachets three times daily. For preventing flare-ups, take 1 sachet three times daily. If your risk is higher, take 6 sachets once daily in the morning. For children 6 years and older: for acute flare-ups, take 30-50 mg mesalazine per kg body weight per day, either once daily or divided into doses. For preventing flare-ups, take 15-30 mg mesalazine per kg body weight per day, divided into doses.

Method

Take Salofalk granules whole with plenty of liquid. Do not chew the granules.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 3g mesalazine (6 sachets of 500 mg). For children, the total daily dose should not exceed 75 mg mesalazine per kg body weight or the maximum adult dose, whichever is lower.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Rash, itching
RARE
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, indigestion, gas, feeling unwell, vomiting
  • Severe stomach pain due to sudden inflammation of the pancreas
  • Changes in liver or pancreatic enzyme levels (shown in blood tests)
  • Dizziness
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice) or stomach pain due to liver or bile duct issues
  • Skin becoming extra sensitive to sunlight or UV light
  • Joint pain
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Numbness or tingling in hands and feet
  • Shortness of breath, cough, wheezing, or lung changes on X-ray due to allergic or inflammatory lung conditions
  • Hair loss
  • Muscle pain
  • Temporary decrease in sperm production
  • Severe allergic reactions with rash, fever, joint pain, difficulty breathing, or severe diarrhea and stomach pain
  • A big drop in overall health, especially with fever and sore throat, which could be due to low white blood cells (making you prone to infections), or other blood cell issues like unexplained bleeding or anemia
  • Shortness of breath, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or swelling in arms/legs, indicating heart problems
  • Kidney problems, such as changes in urine color or amount, swollen limbs, or sudden pain in the side (from kidney stones)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Salofalk if you are allergic to mesalazine, salicylates (like aspirin), or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Salofalk if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had lung problems, especially asthma.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have been sensitive to medicines containing sulfasalazine in the past.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems.

  • Stop taking Salofalk and see a doctor immediately if you develop a severe skin rash, skin peeling, blisters, or mouth sores.
  • Your doctor may ask for regular blood and urine tests during your treatment.
  • Drink enough fluids while taking Salofalk, as kidney stones can form. Symptoms might include pain in your side or blood in your urine.
  • Stop taking Salofalk and get immediate medical help if you develop serious skin reactions like red patches, blisters, peeling skin, or flu-like symptoms (e.g., DRESS, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or toxic epidermal necrolysis).
