How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose, usually starting low and increasing. For example, for rheumatoid arthritis, it's typically 1 tablet daily, increasing to 2 tablets twice daily. For inflammatory bowel diseases, it can be 2-4 tablets 2-4 times daily for adults.

Method

Take the tablets whole with food, spaced evenly throughout the day. Do not crush or break them.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults can be up to 8 grams (16 tablets) for inflammatory bowel diseases, as directed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Stomach ache, feeling sick (nausea), vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite.
  • Headache, dizziness, changes in taste, ringing in the ears.
  • Cough.
  • Rash, itching, joint pain.
  • Low number of white blood cells, protein in urine, fever.
RARE
  • Low number of platelets, feeling sad (depression), shortness of breath, yellow skin or eyes (jaundice), hair loss, itchy skin rash (hives), swollen face, increased liver enzyme levels in blood tests.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to sulfasalazine, sulfonamide medicines, aspirin, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • This medicine can cause severe skin rashes and allergic reactions. If you develop a rash, fever, or swelling, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, severe allergies, asthma, a certain blood disorder (G6PD deficiency), or abnormal blood counts. Regular blood tests will be done.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to help prevent kidney stones.
  • This medicine may turn your skin and body fluids (like sweat, urine, and tears) yellow-orange. This is harmless.

  • This medicine is not recommended for children with systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C
