How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your or your child's specific daily dose based on weight or body surface area.

Method

Saizen is given as a daily injection under the skin, usually in the evening before bedtime.

Important

For adults, the final daily dose rarely goes over 1.0 mg; always follow your doctor's exact instructions for the maximum dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Redness, itching, swelling, rash, pain, inflammation, bleeding, or bruising at the injection site.
  • Local loss of fat under the skin.
  • In adults: tingling, burning, pain, and/or numbness in the fingers (especially thumb, index, and sometimes middle/ring fingers).
  • In adults: swelling in the limbs, muscle pain, numbness, tingling, and joint pain. These effects are usually temporary and occur at the start of treatment.
  • Headache.
RARE
  • Increased pressure inside the skull (headache, nausea, vomiting, double vision, other vision problems) in children.
  • In children: tingling, burning, pain, and/or numbness in the fingers (especially thumb, index, and sometimes middle/ring fingers).
  • In children: swelling in the limbs, muscle pain, numbness, tingling, and joint pain. These effects are usually temporary and occur at the start of treatment.
  • Enlarged breasts (in one or both sides).
  • Hip problems (e.g., slipped thigh bone growth plate, tissue death due to poor blood supply).
  • Lowered thyroid hormone levels. Your doctor can check this and prescribe treatment if needed.
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • Allergic reactions.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Saizen if you or your child are allergic to somatropin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if your child's bones have stopped growing and they have reached their full adult height.
  • Do not use if you have active cancer. Cancer treatment must be completed before starting Saizen.
  • Do not use if you or your child have a severe illness (e.g., complications from open heart surgery, severe injury, or acute breathing problems).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you or your child get severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, or vision changes, as these can be signs of a rare but serious side effect called brain swelling.

  • Do not use if you or your child have diabetes with related eye problems (diabetic retinopathy). Your doctor will closely monitor blood sugar and may adjust diabetes treatment.
  • Always change the injection site to avoid damage to the skin. Your doctor or pharmacist can show you suitable areas.
  • In rare cases, Saizen can cause pancreatitis, which is severe stomach and back pain. Contact your doctor if you or your child experience such pain.
