How to Use

Dosage

For children and adolescents, your doctor will decide the dose, usually between 0.025-0.050 mg per kg of body weight daily or 0.7-1.4 mg per square meter of body surface area daily. For adults, treatment starts with a small daily dose of 0.15-0.30 mg, which your doctor will gradually adjust.

Method

Saizen is given daily as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous injection), preferably at bedtime.

Important

The final recommended growth hormone dose for adults rarely exceeds 1.0 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Reactions at the injection site, such as redness, itching, swelling, rash, pain, or bruising.
  • Local loss of fat under the skin at the injection site.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome in adults (tingling, burning, pain, and/or numbness in fingers, especially the thumb and index finger).
  • Fluid retention in adults (swelling in limbs, muscle pain, numbness, tingling, joint pain).
  • Headache.
RARE
  • Increased pressure around the brain, causing headache, nausea, vomiting, double vision, and other vision problems.
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome in children (tingling, burning, pain, and/or numbness in fingers, especially the thumb and index finger).
  • Fluid retention in children (swelling in limbs, muscle pain, numbness, tingling, joint pain).
  • Enlarged breasts (in one or both sides).
  • A hip problem where the growing part of the thigh bone slips (slipped capital femoral epiphysis) or tissue death in the upper thigh bone due to poor blood supply.
  • Lowered thyroid hormone levels.
  • Allergic reactions.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you or your child are allergic to somatropin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if your child's bones have stopped growing and they have reached their final height.
  • Do not use if you have an active tumor (cancer); any tumor treatment must be finished before starting Saizen.
  • Do not use if you or your child have diabetes with related eye problems (diabetic retinopathy).
  • Do not use if you or your child have a severe acute illness, such as complications from open heart surgery, abdominal surgery, severe injuries, or acute breathing problems.

  • Contact your doctor immediately if you or your child experience severe or recurring headaches, vision problems, nausea, and/or vomiting, as these can be signs of pressure around the brain.
  • Always change the injection site to prevent skin damage.
  • Saizen is not for children with Prader-Willi syndrome unless they also have growth hormone deficiency; severe obesity, airway blockages, or sleep apnea increase risks for these children.
