How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 1 gram (2 tablets) per day. The usual maintenance dose is 2-3 grams (4-6 tablets) per day. Your doctor will adjust your dose based on how you respond.

Method

Take the tablets by mouth with at least half a glass of water. You can take them with or without food. The daily dose can be taken once a day or split into two doses.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose is 3 grams.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Changes in field of vision (narrowing).
  • Tiredness and extreme sleepiness.
  • Joint pain.
  • Headache.
  • Weight gain.
  • Tremors (shaking).
  • Swelling (edema).
  • Dizziness.
  • Numbness or tingling sensation.
  • Difficulty concentrating and memory problems.
  • Mental side effects: agitation, hostility, nervousness, irritability, depression, thought disorders, paranoia, insomnia.
  • Nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
  • Blurred vision, double vision, and rapid involuntary eye movements.
  • Speech problems.
  • Decrease in red blood cells (anemia).
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning (alopecia).
  • Agitation or restlessness (in children).
RARE
  • Lack of movement coordination or clumsiness.
  • More severe mental symptoms, such as hypomania, mania, and psychosis.
  • Rash.
  • Severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face and/or throat.
  • Hives.
  • Significant sedation, stupor, and confusion.
  • Suicide attempts.
  • Other eye problems, such as retinal disorders.
  • Other eye problems, such as optic nerve atrophy or inflammation.
  • Hallucinations.
  • Liver problems.
  • Reduced sharpness of vision.
  • Abnormal findings on brain MRI scans.
  • Swelling in the nerve cell protective layer in a brain area, seen on MRI scans.
  • Movement disorders in infants treated for infantile spasms.
  • Abnormal findings on brain MRI scans, especially in infants.
  • Swelling in the nerve cell protective layer in a brain area, seen on MRI scans, especially in infants.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Sabrilex if you are allergic to vigabatrin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking Sabrilex if you are breastfeeding, pregnant, planning to get pregnant, have or have had depression or other mental health issues, kidney problems, or vision problems.
  • Sabrilex can cause changes in your vision, including narrowing of your field of vision, which can be permanent. Tell your doctor right away if you notice any changes in your sight. Regular eye exams are needed before, during, and after treatment.
  • A small number of people taking anti-epilepsy medicines, including Sabrilex, have had thoughts of harming themselves or suicide. If you have these thoughts, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Do not drive or use machines if your epilepsy is not controlled. Sabrilex can cause drowsiness and dizziness, affecting your ability to concentrate and react. If you experience these symptoms, avoid dangerous activities like driving or operating machinery.

  • Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor. Stopping suddenly can cause seizures to return. Your doctor will tell you how to gradually reduce the dose.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking clonazepam, as taking it with Sabrilex can increase the calming effects of both medicines.
  • Do not take Sabrilex with other medicines that can cause eye problems.
