How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe your specific dose. Treatment usually starts with a small dose, which is increased gradually. For early Parkinson's disease, a typical dose is 6–8 mg daily, and for advanced Parkinson's, it's usually 8–16 mg daily.

Method

This medicine is a patch that you stick on your skin. Apply a new patch to a different skin area each day and leave it on for 24 hours. Change the patch around the same time every day, and do not cut it.

Important

For early Parkinson's disease, the maximum dose is 8 mg per day. For advanced Parkinson's, the maximum dose is 16 mg per day.

  • Redness, increased sweating, itching (general)
  • Vertigo (feeling of spinning)
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not real (hallucinations)
  • Low blood pressure when standing up, high blood pressure
  • Difficulty falling asleep, sleep problems, nightmares, unusual dreams
  • Involuntary movements related to Parkinson's disease (dyskinesia)
  • Fainting, feeling dizzy when standing up due to low blood pressure
  • Inability to resist strong urges that could be harmful to you or others, like excessive gambling, repeated meaningless acts, uncontrolled excessive shopping or wasting money
  • Binge eating (eating large amounts of food in a short time) or compulsive eating (eating more than normal and more than needed to satisfy hunger)
RARE
  • Blurred vision
  • Weight gain
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., swelling of the face, tongue, or lips)
  • Low blood pressure (general)
  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased sex drive
  • Abnormal heart rhythm
  • Stomach discomfort and pain
  • Generalized itching, skin irritation
  • Sudden onset of sleep without warning
  • Inability to get or keep an erection
  • Feeling restless, disoriented, confused, or paranoid (feeling persecuted)
  • High or abnormal liver function tests
  • Vision disturbances like seeing colors or light phenomena
  • Elevated creatine phosphokinase (CPK) levels (an enzyme found mostly in skeletal muscles)
  • Delusions
  • Sudden severe confusion (delirium)
  • Irritability
  • Aggressiveness
  • Psychotic disorders
  • Generalized rash
  • Involuntary muscle spasms (convulsions)
  • Strong craving for Rotigotine Medical Valley in higher doses than needed for treatment (dopamine dysregulation syndrome)
  • Diarrhea
  • Dropped head syndrome (head bent forward)
  • Rhabdomyolysis (a rare, severe muscle disorder causing muscle pain, tenderness, and weakness, which can lead to kidney problems)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to rotigotine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Remove the patch before an MRI scan or electrical cardioversion to avoid burns, as the patch contains aluminum.
  • This medicine can make you very sleepy or cause you to fall asleep suddenly. Do not drive or use machines if this happens.
  • This medicine can cause changes in behavior or unusual thoughts, such as strong urges to gamble, overshop, overeat, or increased sexual interest. Tell your doctor about them.
  • The patch can cause skin irritation, redness, or itching. Change the patch site daily and avoid using the same area for 14 days. If irritation is severe or lasts long, contact your doctor.

  • This medicine can cause you to faint or feel dizzy. Tell your doctor if this happens.
  • This medicine can cause involuntary muscle movements. Tell your doctor if you notice them.
