How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you your starting dose, which is usually 1 mg or 2 mg per day for restless legs, and 2 mg or 4 mg per day for Parkinson's disease. The dose may be slowly increased.

Method

Apply one patch to clean, dry, healthy skin on your shoulder, upper arm, stomach, side of your body, thigh, or hip. Change the patch every 24 hours at around the same time each day. Do not cut patches.

Important

The maximum daily dose for Parkinson's disease is 16 mg, and for restless legs syndrome it is 3 mg. Your doctor will determine your exact maximum dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Feeling sleepy or dizzy
  • Feeling sick (nausea), vomiting
  • Skin irritation where the patch is placed (redness, itching)
  • Falling
  • Hiccups
  • Weight loss
  • Swelling in legs and feet
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Feeling your heart beat fast (palpitations)
  • Constipation, dry mouth, heartburn
  • Redness, increased sweating, generalized itching
  • Spinning dizziness (vertigo)
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not real (hallucinations)
  • Low blood pressure when standing up, high blood pressure
  • Sleep problems (e.g., difficulty falling asleep, unusual dreams, nightmares)
  • Involuntary movements related to Parkinson's disease (dyskinesia)
  • Fainting or dizziness when standing up due to low blood pressure
  • Strong urges you cannot resist, like excessive gambling, shopping, or eating, or increased sexual interest
  • Irritability
  • Allergic reaction (e.g., skin rash, itching)
  • Suddenly falling asleep without warning
RARE
  • Blurred vision
  • Weight gain
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Abnormal heart rhythm
  • Stomach pain or discomfort
  • Inability to get or keep an erection
  • Confusion, feeling lost (disorientation), paranoia, restlessness (agitation), aggressive behavior, strange thoughts (psychotic disorders, delusions), or severe confusion (delirium)
  • Abnormal liver test results
  • Visual problems, such as seeing colors or lights differently
  • Increased levels of a muscle enzyme (creatine phosphokinase or CPK)
  • Diarrhea
  • Head tilting forward
  • A severe muscle problem called rhabdomyolysis, causing muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, and possibly kidney problems
  • Generalized rash
  • Involuntary muscle cramps (seizures)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to rotigotine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Remove the patch before an MRI scan or electrical heart treatment, as the patch contains aluminum and can cause burns.
  • Your blood pressure and eyes need to be checked regularly during treatment.
  • This medicine can make you very sleepy or cause you to fall asleep suddenly. Do not drive or operate machinery if this happens.
  • Tell your doctor if you experience uncontrolled muscle movements, changes in behavior (like strong urges to gamble or shop), or have unusual thoughts.

  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Do not give this medicine to children under 18 years old.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as it can cause serious withdrawal symptoms.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you are taking other medicines that affect blood pressure, sedatives, or medicines for mental illness, or anti-sickness medicines (metoclopramide) or antipsychotics.
  • Avoid exposing the patch area to heat (e.g., strong sunlight, sauna, hot baths) as this can make the medicine release too quickly.
