How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually start with 5 mg or 10 mg once a day. Your doctor may adjust the dose every four weeks to find what's right for you. Children (6-17 years) typically start with 5 mg once a day, with a maximum dose of 10 mg or 20 mg daily depending on the condition.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water once a day, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day to make it easier to remember.

Important

The maximum daily dose for Rosuvastatin Xiromed is 40 mg. This dose is typically for patients with very high cholesterol and a high risk of heart attack or stroke whose cholesterol levels are not lowered enough with 20 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Abdominal pain
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Muscle pain
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Increased protein in urine (often temporary, mainly for 40 mg dose)
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar/fats, are overweight, or have high blood pressure)
RARE
  • Rash, itching, or other skin reactions
  • Increased protein in urine (often temporary, mainly for 5, 10, 20 mg doses)
  • Severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue, and/or throat, difficulty swallowing and breathing, severe itching with raised lumps) - stop medicine and seek immediate medical help.
  • Muscle damage in adults (if you have unusual muscle pain or aches that last longer than expected, stop medicine and tell your doctor immediately).
  • Severe stomach pain (pancreatitis)
  • Increased liver enzymes in the blood
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)
  • Small amounts of blood in urine
  • Nerve damage in legs and arms (such as numbness)
  • Joint pain
  • Memory loss
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia)
  • Diarrhea
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling (edema)
  • Sleep disorders (including insomnia and nightmares)
  • Sexual problems
  • Depression
  • Breathing difficulties (including persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever)
  • Tendon injury
  • Persistent muscle weakness
  • Myasthenia gravis (a disease causing general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles)
  • Ocular myasthenia (a disease causing eye muscle weakness)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to rosuvastatin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Women must use effective contraception during treatment.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease or severe kidney disease.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you experience repeated or unexplained muscle pain or aches, especially if you also feel unwell or have a fever. Also, tell your doctor if you have persistent muscle weakness.
  • Do not take if you are taking ciclosporin (used after organ transplants).

  • Be cautious if you are of Asian origin (Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, Korean, or Indian), as your doctor may need to prescribe a lower starting dose.
  • Do not take the 40 mg dose if you have moderate kidney problems, thyroid problems, muscle issues (myopathy), regularly consume large amounts of alcohol, are of Asian origin, or take other cholesterol-lowering medicines called fibrates.
  • Stop taking Rosuvastatin Xiromed and seek immediate medical attention if you notice severe skin reactions like red, target-like spots, blistering, peeling skin, or mouth sores (Stevens-Johnson syndrome) or a widespread rash with fever and swollen lymph nodes (DRESS syndrome).
  • If you need to take fusidic acid for a bacterial infection, you must temporarily stop Rosuvastatin Xiromed. Your doctor will tell you when it is safe to restart. Combining these medicines can rarely lead to serious muscle problems.
  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have kidney disease, liver disease, thyroid problems, or if you regularly drink large amounts of alcohol.
  • If you are over 70 years old, your doctor will choose the correct starting dose for you.
  • Inform your doctor if you have severe breathing difficulties.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had Myasthenia Gravis (a condition causing general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles) or Ocular Myasthenia (a condition causing eye muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes worsen these conditions or cause them to appear.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Concurrent use of aluminium and magnesium reduces the effectiveness of the drug,. Consider potential interactions.
