How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take. It usually starts with 5 mg or 10 mg. For children and teens (6-17 years), the dose is usually 5-20 mg per day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water, once a day. You can take it with or without food. Try to take it at the same time every day to help you remember.

Important

The highest dose is 40 mg per day. This is only for adults with very high cholesterol and high risk of heart problems. Children should not take the 40 mg dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache, stomach ache, constipation, feeling sick, muscle pain, feeling weak, dizziness.
  • More protein in your urine (this usually gets better on its own, no need to stop medicine). This usually applies to the 40 mg dose.
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, high fats in blood, are overweight, or have high blood pressure). Your doctor will check you for this.
RARE
  • Skin rash, itching, or other skin reactions.
  • More protein in your urine (this usually gets better on its own, no need to stop medicine). This usually applies to 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg doses.
  • Severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue, throat; trouble swallowing or breathing; severe itchy skin). Stop medicine and get help right away.
  • Muscle damage in adults (unusual muscle pain that lasts too long). Stop medicine and tell your doctor right away.
  • Severe stomach pain (pancreatitis).
  • High levels of liver enzymes in your blood.
  • Bleeding or bruising more easily because of low blood platelets.
  • Lupus-like syndrome (a condition with symptoms like rash, joint issues, and problems with blood cells).
  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice), liver inflammation (hepatitis).
  • Small amounts of blood in your urine.
  • Nerve damage in arms and legs (like numbness).
  • Joint pain.
  • Memory loss.
  • Breast growth in men (gynecomastia).
  • Diarrhea, cough, shortness of breath, swelling, sleep problems (including insomnia and nightmares), sexual problems, depression, tendon injury, or lasting muscle weakness.
  • Myasthenia gravis (a condition causing general muscle weakness, which can affect breathing or eye muscles).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to rosuvastatin or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while taking it, stop right away and tell your doctor. Women must use reliable birth control.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease or severe kidney disease.
  • Do not take if you have repeated or unexplained muscle aches or pains.
  • Do not take if you are using sofosbuvir, velpatasvir, and voxilaprevir (used for hepatitis C).

  • Do not take if you are using ciclosporin (used after organ transplants).
  • Stop taking and get medical help right away if you have trouble breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, severe itchy skin, or a serious skin rash (like red spots with blisters, peeling skin, or sores in your mouth or eyes).
  • Stop taking and tell your doctor right away if you have unusual muscle pain or aches that don't go away, muscle tear, or a lupus-like illness (symptoms like rash, joint problems, and blood cell issues).
  • Tell your doctor if you regularly drink a lot of alcohol, or if your thyroid gland is not working normally, or if you are of Asian origin.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Concurrent use of aluminium and magnesium reduces the effectiveness of the drug,. Consider potential interactions.
