How to Use

Dosage

The typical starting dose for adults is 5 mg or 10 mg once a day. For reducing heart attack risk, the recommended dose is 20 mg once a day. Your doctor will decide your dose.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water once a day, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day to help you remember.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 40 mg. This dose should not be used for children.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Muscle pain
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Increased protein in urine (more common with 40 mg dose, usually gets better on its own)
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, high fat levels, are overweight, and have high blood pressure)
RARE
  • Rash, itching, or other skin reactions
  • Increased protein in urine (for 5, 10, and 20 mg doses, usually gets better on its own)
  • Severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue/throat, trouble swallowing/breathing, severe itching with hives)
  • Muscle damage (in adults)
  • Severe stomach pain (pancreatitis)
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood
  • Easier bleeding or bruising due to low platelet count
  • Lupus-like syndrome (e.g., rash, joint pain, effects on blood cells)
  • Jaundice (yellow skin and eyes)
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)
  • Small amounts of blood in urine
  • Nerve damage in legs and arms (e.g., numbness)
  • Joint pain
  • Memory loss
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia)
  • Diarrhea
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling (edema)
  • Sleep disorders, including insomnia and nightmares
  • Sexual problems
  • Depression
  • Breathing problems, including persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever
  • Tendon damage and persistent muscle weakness
  • Myasthenia gravis (general muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to rosuvastatin or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Use effective birth control during treatment.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease or severe kidney disease.
  • Do not take if you have muscle aches or pains that keep coming back or have no clear cause.
  • Do not take if you are using medicines for Hepatitis C (sofosbuvir/velpatasvir/voxilaprevir) or ciclosporin (used after organ transplants).

  • Stop taking this medicine and get medical help right away if you have trouble breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, severe itching, a widespread rash with blisters, or flu-like symptoms.
  • Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor right away if you have unusual muscle pain that lasts, muscle tears, or a lupus-like syndrome (e.g., rash, joint pain, blood cell problems).
  • Do not take the 40 mg dose if you have moderate kidney disease, thyroid problems, a history of muscle pain from other cholesterol medicines, regularly drink a lot of alcohol, are of Asian background, or take fibrate medicines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Concurrent use of aluminium and magnesium reduces the effectiveness of the drug,. Consider potential interactions.
