How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually start with 5 mg or 10 mg once daily. Children (6-17 years) usually take 5-20 mg once daily. Your doctor will decide the right dose for you.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Take one tablet once daily, at any time, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day to help you remember.

Important

For adults, the maximum dose is 40 mg per day. For children and adolescents (6-17 years), the maximum dose is 10 mg or 20 mg per day, and the 40 mg tablet should not be used for children.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Muscle pain
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Increased protein in your urine (this usually goes back to normal and you usually don’t need to stop taking the medicine)
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar or fat levels, are overweight, or have high blood pressure)
RARE
  • Skin rash, itching, or other skin reactions
  • Severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat, difficulty swallowing and breathing, and severe itching with hives.
  • Severe muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Severe stomach pain (pancreatitis)
  • Increased liver enzymes in blood tests
  • Bleeding or bruising more easily than usual
  • Lupus-like illness (with rash, joint pain, and effects on blood cells)
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Small amounts of blood in the urine
  • Nerve damage in arms and legs (numbness)
  • Joint pain
  • Memory loss
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia)
  • Diarrhea
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling (edema)
  • Sleep problems, including insomnia and nightmares
  • Sexual problems
  • Depression
  • Tendon injury
  • Persistent muscle weakness

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to rosuvastatin or any of its other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant, stop taking it and tell your doctor right away.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver disease or severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have repeated or unexplained muscle pain or aches.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are using specific medicines for Hepatitis C (sofosbuvir/velpatasvir/voxilaprevir) or ciclosporin (used after organ transplants).

  • Stop taking this medicine and get medical help right away if you have trouble breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or severe itching with hives, as these could be signs of a severe allergic reaction.
  • Stop taking this medicine and get medical help right away if you have severe skin rashes, peeling skin, mouth sores, or a widespread rash with fever, as these could be signs of severe skin reactions.
  • Stop taking this medicine and get medical help right away if you have unusual muscle pain that lasts a long time, muscle tears, or a lupus-like illness (with rash, joint pain, and blood problems).
  • Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you have moderate kidney problems, thyroid issues, drink a lot of alcohol, are of Asian origin, or take other cholesterol-lowering medicines called fibrates, especially if you are taking the 40 mg dose.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Concurrent use of aluminium and magnesium reduces the effectiveness of the drug,. Consider potential interactions.
