How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 5 mg or 10 mg once daily. For children (6-17 years), the dose range is 5-20 mg once daily, usually starting at 5 mg.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water, once daily. You can take it with or without food, but try to take it at the same time each day to help you remember.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 40 mg. For children (6-17 years), the maximum daily dose is 10 mg or 20 mg, depending on the condition. The 40 mg tablet is not for children.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Muscle pain
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Increased protein in urine (usually normalizes by itself; applies only to 40 mg dose)
  • Diabetes (more likely if high blood sugar, fats, overweight, or high blood pressure)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, and severe itching (hives). Stop immediately and seek medical help.
  • Muscle damage (stop taking and contact your doctor immediately if you have unusual muscle pain that lasts longer than expected)
  • Severe stomach pain (pancreatitis)
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood
  • Increased bleeding or bruising (due to low platelet count)
  • Lupus-like syndrome (symptoms include rash, joint pain, and effects on blood cells)
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes)
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)
  • Blood in urine
  • Nerve damage in legs and arms (like numbness)
  • Memory loss
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia)
  • Diarrhea
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling (edema)
  • Sleep problems, including insomnia and nightmares
  • Sexual problems
  • Depression
  • Tendon problems
  • Myasthenia gravis (general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness)
  • Rash, itching, or other skin reactions
  • Increased protein in urine (usually normalizes by itself; applies to 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg doses)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to rosuvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant, stop taking it immediately and tell your doctor. Women must use effective contraception during treatment.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease or severe kidney disease.
  • Do not take if you have repeated or unexplained muscle aches or pains.
  • Do not take if you are taking sofosbuvir/velpatasvir/voxilaprevir (for Hepatitis C) or ciclosporin (for organ transplants).

  • The 40 mg dose is not suitable if you have moderate kidney disease, an underactive thyroid, repeated muscle pain (especially with a history of muscle problems with other cholesterol medicines or if you are Asian), regularly drink a lot of alcohol, or take other fibrate medicines.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor immediately if you develop a severe skin rash (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or DRESS syndrome) with fever and flu-like symptoms, blistering, or skin peeling.
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have ongoing muscle weakness.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had myasthenia (general muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes worsen these conditions.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Concurrent use of aluminium and magnesium reduces the effectiveness of the drug,. Consider potential interactions.
