How to Use

Dosage

The typical starting dose is 5 mg or 10 mg once daily. Your doctor might adjust this dose over time. For reducing heart attack/stroke risk, the recommended dose is 20 mg daily.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water once a day. You can take it at any time of day, with or without food, but try to take it at the same time each day to help you remember.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 40 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Weakness
  • Increased protein in urine (for 40 mg dose only, usually resolves)
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, high fat levels, are overweight, or have high blood pressure)
RARE
  • Skin rash, itching, or other skin reactions
  • Increased protein in urine (for 5, 10, 20 mg doses, usually resolves)
  • Severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue and/or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, severe skin itching)
  • Muscle damage in adults (weakness, tenderness, or pain)
  • Severe stomach pain (pancreatitis)
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood
  • Unusual bruising or bleeding due to low platelet count
  • Lupus-like syndrome (symptoms include rash, joint problems, and effects on blood cells)
  • Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)
  • Small amounts of blood in urine
  • Nerve damage in legs and arms (e.g., numbness)
  • Joint pain
  • Memory loss
  • Gynaecomastia (breast enlargement in men)
  • Diarrhea
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Edema (swelling)
  • Sleep disturbances (insomnia, nightmares)
  • Sexual problems
  • Depression
  • Tendon injury, sometimes including rupture
  • Persistent muscle weakness
  • Myasthenia gravis or ocular myasthenia (disease causing general or eye muscle weakness)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to rosuvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while taking this medicine, stop immediately and contact your doctor.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney disease.
  • Do not take if you have repeated or unexplained muscle aches or pains (myopathy).

  • Do not take if you are using a combination of sofosbuvir, velpatasvir, and voxilaprevir (used to treat hepatitis C).
  • Do not take if you are taking ciclosporin (used after organ transplants).
  • Stop taking immediately and seek medical help if you experience severe skin reactions such as breathing difficulties, swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat, severe itching, widespread rash, or skin blistering/peeling.
  • Tell your doctor if you have muscle weakness that continues for a long time.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had myasthenia (muscle weakness) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes worsen these conditions.
  • If you need to take fusidic acid for an infection, you must temporarily stop Rosuvastatin Sandoz. Talk to your doctor about when it's safe to restart.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Concurrent use of aluminium and magnesium reduces the effectiveness of the drug,. Consider potential interactions.
