How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 5 mg or 10 mg once a day. For children and adolescents (6–17 years old), the dose is usually 5–20 mg once a day.

Method

Take the tablet once a day with water. You can take it with or without food, but try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 40 mg. For children and adolescents (6–17 years old), the maximum dose is 10 mg or 20 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Nausea
  • Muscle pain
  • Feeling weak
  • Dizziness
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar or fat, are overweight, or have high blood pressure)
  • Increased protein in urine (especially with 40 mg dose, usually goes away on its own)
RARE
  • Skin rash, itching, or other skin reactions
  • Severe allergic reaction (swelling of face, lips, tongue, throat, difficulty breathing, or severe skin rash/blisters)
  • Severe muscle pain or muscle damage
  • Severe stomach pain (pancreatitis)
  • Changes in liver function (shown in blood tests)
  • Easier bleeding or bruising
  • Lupus-like syndrome (skin rash, joint pain, blood cell problems)
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice) or liver inflammation
  • Blood in urine
  • Nerve damage (like numbness in arms or legs)
  • Memory loss
  • Breast enlargement in men
  • Persistent muscle weakness or conditions like myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness that worsens with activity, double vision, drooping eyelids, trouble swallowing)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if you have liver problems.
  • Do not use if you have severe kidney disease.
  • Do not use if you have repeated or unexplained muscle pain.
  • Do not use if you are taking cyclosporine (a medicine used after organ transplants).

  • Stop taking this medicine immediately and seek medical help if you have a severe allergic reaction (e.g., swelling of the face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing, or severe skin rash/blisters).
  • Stop taking this medicine immediately and contact your doctor if you experience unusual or long-lasting muscle pain or weakness.
  • Talk to your doctor if you regularly drink a lot of alcohol.
  • This medicine should not be given to children under 6 years old. The 40 mg dose is not suitable for children and adolescents under 18 years old.
  • If you need to take fusidic acid (an antibiotic), you must temporarily stop taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Concurrent use of aluminium and magnesium reduces the effectiveness of the drug,. Consider potential interactions.
