How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 5 mg or 10 mg once a day. Your doctor may increase this dose over time. For children (6-17 years), the dose is usually 5-20 mg once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water once a day. You can take it with or without food, but try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 40 mg. The 40 mg tablet should not be used by children under 18 years old.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Muscle pain
  • Feeling weak
  • Dizziness
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, high fat levels, are overweight, or have high blood pressure)
  • Increased protein in your urine (this usually goes back to normal on its own, only with 40 mg dose)
RARE
  • Skin rash, itching, and other skin reactions
  • Increased protein in your urine (this usually goes back to normal on its own, with 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg doses)
  • Severe allergic reaction (symptoms include swelling of your face, lips, tongue, and/or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, severe itching with raised bumps)
  • Muscle damage in adults (stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you have unusual muscle aches or pains that last longer than expected)
  • Severe stomach pain (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in your blood
  • Easier bleeding or bruising than normal (due to low platelet count)
  • Lupus-like syndrome (includes rash, joint problems, and effects on blood cells)
  • Yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Traces of blood in your urine (very small amounts)
  • Nerve damage in arms and legs (like numbness)
  • Joint pain
  • Memory loss
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia)
  • Loose stools (diarrhoea)
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling (oedema)
  • Sleep disturbances (including insomnia and nightmares)
  • Sexual problems
  • Depression
  • Breathing problems (including constant cough and/or shortness of breath or fever)
  • Tendon damage
  • Persistent muscle weakness
  • Myasthenia gravis (a disease causing general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles)
  • Ocular myasthenia (a disease causing muscle weakness in the eye)

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking this medicine and get medical help right away if you have an allergic reaction. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, severe skin rash, or blistering of the skin.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have unusual muscle pain or weakness that lasts a long time, muscle tears, or lupus-like symptoms (rash, joint pain, blood cell issues).
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant, stop taking it and tell your doctor right away.
  • Do not take if you have a liver disease.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney problems.

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines for Hepatitis C, organ transplants (ciclosporin), or bacterial infections (fusidic acid), or HIV medication. You may need to temporarily stop taking this medicine.
  • If you are over 70 years old, your doctor may need to adjust your starting dose.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe breathing problems.
  • If you are of Asian origin, your doctor may need to adjust your starting dose.
  • Avoid regular heavy alcohol consumption while taking this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an underactive thyroid.
  • Inform your doctor if you have or have had myasthenia gravis or ocular myasthenia, as this medicine can worsen these conditions.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Concurrent use of aluminium and magnesium reduces the effectiveness of the drug,. Consider potential interactions.
