How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is 5 mg or 10 mg once a day. Your doctor may increase the dose to 20 mg or even 40 mg. For children and adolescents (6-17 years), the dose is usually 5-20 mg once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. Take one tablet once a day, at any time of day, with or without food. Try to take your medicine at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 40 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain, constipation, nausea
  • Muscle pain
  • Feeling weak, dizziness
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, are overweight, or have high blood pressure)
RARE
  • Skin rash, itching, or other skin reactions
  • Severe stomach pain (pancreatitis)
  • Liver problems (e.g., increased liver enzymes, inflammation, yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Easy bruising or bleeding (due to low platelet count)
  • Traces of blood in urine (very small amounts)
  • Nerve damage in arms or legs (e.g., numbness or tingling)
  • Joint pain
  • Memory loss
  • Breast enlargement in men
  • Diarrhea
  • Cough, shortness of breath, or breathing problems
  • Swelling (edema)
  • Sleep problems, including insomnia and nightmares
  • Sexual problems
  • Depression
  • Tendon problems, persistent muscle weakness

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking the medicine and seek immediate medical help if you have an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or severe itching of the skin.
  • Stop taking the medicine and seek immediate medical help if you develop a severe skin rash, blistering of the skin, mouth sores, or other skin reactions, possibly with fever.
  • Stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience unusual or long-lasting muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or a muscle tear.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have liver disease.

  • Do not use this medicine if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are taking certain medicines for Hepatitis C or HIV, or ciclosporin (used after organ transplants).
  • Talk to your doctor if you regularly drink large amounts of alcohol.
  • Talk to your doctor if your thyroid gland is not working properly.
  • If you are of Asian origin, talk to your doctor, as a lower starting dose might be appropriate for you.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have or have had myasthenia (a disease causing general muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes worsen it.
  • If you are taking fusidic acid (for bacterial infections), you must temporarily stop using this medicine. Your doctor will tell you when it's safe to restart.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Concurrent use of aluminium and magnesium reduces the effectiveness of the drug,. Consider potential interactions.
