How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually start with 5 mg or 10 mg daily. Children (6-17 years) usually start with 5 mg daily. Your doctor might change your dose.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water once a day. You can take it at any time of day, but try to take it at the same time each day to help you remember.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 40 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Muscle pain
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Increased protein in urine (especially with 40 mg dose, usually temporary)
  • Diabetes (more likely with high blood sugar/fats, overweight, high blood pressure)
RARE
  • Rash, itching, or other skin reactions
  • Severe allergic reactions (swelling of face, lips, tongue, throat; difficulty swallowing/breathing; intense itching with raised lumps)
  • Muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Severe stomach pain (pancreatitis)
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in blood
  • Increased bleeding or bruising tendency due to low platelet count
  • Lupus-like syndrome (rash, joint problems, effects on blood cells)
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)
  • Small amounts of blood in urine
  • Nerve damage in legs and arms (e.g., numbness)
  • Joint pain
  • Memory loss
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia)
  • Diarrhea
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling (edema)
  • Sleep disturbances (including insomnia and nightmares)
  • Sexual problems
  • Depression
  • Tendon injury
  • Persistent muscle weakness
  • Myasthenia gravis (general muscle weakness)
  • Ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to rosuvastatin or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant, stop taking it and tell your doctor immediately. Use effective contraception during treatment.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor right away if you have unusual or unexplained muscle aches, pain, or weakness that lasts longer than expected. This could be a sign of a serious muscle problem.
  • Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical help if you get severe skin reactions such as a widespread rash, peeling skin, or mouth sores (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome or DRESS).
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver disease or severe kidney disease. Your doctor may check your liver function with blood tests.

  • Do not take this medicine if you are using cyclosporine (after organ transplant) or a combination of sofosbuvir, velpatasvir, and voxilaprevir (for hepatitis C).
  • The 40 mg dose is not suitable if you have moderate kidney disease, an underactive thyroid, a history of muscle problems in your family, regularly drink a lot of alcohol, are of Asian origin, or are taking fibrate medicines. Discuss this with your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Concurrent use of aluminium and magnesium reduces the effectiveness of the drug,. Consider potential interactions.
