How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually start you on 5 mg or 10 mg once a day. For children aged 6-17, the usual starting dose is 5 mg once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water, once a day, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day to help you remember.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 40 mg. For children, the maximum daily dose is 10 mg or 20 mg, depending on the condition.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Muscle pain
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Temporarily higher protein in urine (for 40 mg dose only)
  • New onset diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, high fats, are overweight, or have high blood pressure)
RARE
  • Severe muscle damage (rhabdomyolysis)
  • Severe stomach pain (pancreatitis)
  • Liver problems (high liver enzymes in blood)
  • Easier bruising or bleeding (low blood platelets)
  • Lupus-like syndrome (rash, joint pain, effects on blood cells)
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Small amounts of blood in urine
  • Nerve damage in arms or legs (numbness)
  • Joint pain
  • Memory loss
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia)
  • Diarrhea
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling (edema)
  • Sleep problems (insomnia, nightmares)
  • Sexual problems
  • Depression
  • Breathing problems (persistent cough, shortness of breath, fever)
  • Tendon damage
  • Persistent muscle weakness
  • General muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis)

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away if you have an allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or a severe skin rash.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have unusual muscle pain or weakness that lasts longer than expected, especially if you also feel unwell or have a fever.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Use effective birth control during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or severe kidney problems.
