How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual starting dose is 5 mg or 10 mg once daily. For children (6-17 years), the usual starting dose is 5 mg once daily, with doses ranging from 5 mg to 20 mg.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water, once daily. You can take it at any time of day, with or without food, but try to take it around the same time each day to help you remember.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 40 mg. For children (6-17 years), the maximum daily dose is 10 mg or 20 mg, depending on the condition being treated; children should not take the 40 mg tablet.

  • Increased protein in urine (especially with 40 mg dose)
  • Diabetes
RARE
  • Skin rash, itching, or other skin reactions
  • Severe muscle pain or weakness (could be a sign of muscle damage)
  • Severe stomach pain (due to inflamed pancreas)
  • Liver problems (e.g., yellowing of skin/eyes, hepatitis, increased liver enzymes)
  • Easy bleeding or bruising (due to low platelet count)
  • Lupus-like syndrome (symptoms include rash, joint problems, and effects on blood cells)
  • Blood in urine (small amounts)
  • Nerve damage in arms or legs (e.g., numbness)
  • Joint pain
  • Memory loss
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia)
  • Diarrhea
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling (oedema)
  • Sleep problems (including insomnia and nightmares)
  • Sexual problems
  • Depression
  • Tendon problems
  • Persistent muscle weakness
  • Myasthenia gravis (a disease causing general muscle weakness)

Important Warnings

  • If you have a serious allergic reaction, such as swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or a severe skin rash with blisters or peeling, stop taking this medicine and seek medical help immediately.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver or severe kidney problems.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you have new or worsening muscle aches, pains, or weakness that are unexplained or last a long time, especially if you also have a fever or feel unwell.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Concurrent use of aluminium and magnesium reduces the effectiveness of the drug,. Consider potential interactions.
