How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually start you on 5 mg or 10 mg once a day. For children aged 6-17, the usual starting dose is 5 mg once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water once a day. You can take it at any time of day, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 40 mg for adults. Children aged 6-17 should not take the 40 mg tablet; their maximum dose is 10 mg or 20 mg, depending on the condition being treated.

  • Headache

  • Dizziness
  • Increased protein in urine (usually gets better on its own)
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, fats, are overweight or have high blood pressure)
RARE
  • Rash, itching or other skin reactions
  • Severe allergic reaction (swelling of face, lips, tongue/throat, difficulty swallowing/breathing, severe skin itching)
  • Muscle damage in adults; unusual or long-lasting muscle pain
  • Severe stomach pain (due to inflamed pancreas)
  • Increased liver enzymes in blood
  • Easy bleeding or bruising
  • Lupus-like syndrome (rash, joint pain, blood cell effects)
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation)
  • Blood in urine
  • Nerve damage in legs and arms (e.g., numbness)
  • Joint pain
  • Memory loss
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia)
  • Diarrhea
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling
  • Sleep problems (including insomnia and nightmares)
  • Sexual problems
  • Depression
  • Tendon injuries
  • Persistent muscle weakness
  • Myasthenia gravis (a disease causing general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles)
  • Ocular myasthenia (a disease causing muscle weakness in the eyes)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to this medicine or its ingredients.
  • Stop taking and get medical help right away if you get a serious skin rash, peeling skin, blisters, or sores in your mouth.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while taking this medicine, stop immediately and tell your doctor.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease or severe kidney problems.
  • Stop taking and tell your doctor right away if you have unusual muscle pain or weakness that lasts longer than expected.

  • Do not take if you are taking certain medicines for Hepatitis C (like sofosbuvir, velpatasvir, voxilaprevir) or ciclosporin.
  • If you need to take fusidic acid for an infection, you must stop taking this medicine temporarily. Your doctor will tell you when it's safe to restart.
  • Tell your doctor if you have myasthenia (muscle weakness disease) or ocular myasthenia (eye muscle weakness), as this medicine can make these conditions worse.
  • Talk to your doctor if you drink a lot of alcohol regularly, have an underactive thyroid, take other cholesterol-lowering medicines (fibrates), or medicines for HIV infection.
  • Tell your doctor if you are over 70, of Asian origin, or have serious breathing problems, as your doctor may need to adjust your dose.
  • Your doctor will do blood tests to check your liver before you start and during treatment.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Concurrent use of aluminium and magnesium reduces the effectiveness of the drug,. Consider potential interactions.
