Rosuvastatin Actavis is a statin medicine that lowers "bad" cholesterol and increases "good" cholesterol in your blood to reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults, typically 5 mg or 10 mg once daily, which can be increased up to a maximum of 40 mg if needed. For children aged 6-17, the dose is 5-20 mg once daily, with a maximum of 10 mg or 20 mg depending on the condition.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water, once daily. You can take it with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day to help you remember.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 40 mg. For children aged 6-17, the maximum daily dose is 10 mg or 20 mg, depending on the condition.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • Constipation
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Muscle pain
  • Feeling weak
  • Dizziness
  • More protein in your urine (this usually gets better on its own and does not mean you need to stop taking Rosuvastatin Actavis, especially with the 40 mg dose).
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, high fat levels, are overweight, or have high blood pressure). Your doctor will monitor you.
RARE
  • Skin rash, itching, or other skin reactions
  • More protein in your urine (this usually gets better on its own and does not mean you need to stop taking Rosuvastatin Actavis, especially with 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg doses).
  • Severe allergic reaction (with symptoms like swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, severe itching with raised lumps on the skin).
  • Muscle damage in adults (stop and contact your doctor if you have unusual muscle pain or weakness that lasts longer than expected).
  • Severe stomach pain (pancreatitis).
  • Increased liver enzymes in your blood.
  • Easier bleeding or bruising (due to low platelet count).
  • Lupus-like syndrome (with symptoms like rash, joint problems, and effects on blood cells).
  • Yellow skin and eyes (jaundice).
  • Hepatitis (liver inflammation).
  • Very small amounts of blood in your urine.
  • Nerve damage in your arms and legs (like numbness or tingling).
  • Joint pain.
  • Memory loss.
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia).
  • Diarrhea (loose stools).
  • Cough.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Swelling (edema).
  • Sleep problems, including insomnia and nightmares.
  • Sexual problems.
  • Depression.
  • Respiratory problems such as persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever.
  • Tendon damage.
  • Persistent muscle weakness.
  • Myasthenia gravis (a disease causing general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles).
  • Ocular myasthenia (a disease causing eye muscle weakness).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to rosuvastatin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant during treatment, stop taking the medicine and tell your doctor immediately. Use effective birth control during treatment.
  • Do not use if you have a liver disease.
  • Do not use if you have a severe kidney problem (or a moderate kidney problem if taking 30 mg or more).
  • Do not use if you have repeated or unexplained muscle aches or pains.

  • Do not use if you are taking medicines for Hepatitis C (sofosbuvir, velpatasvir, voxilaprevir) or cyclosporine (e.g., after an organ transplant).
  • Stop immediately and seek medical attention if you experience severe skin reactions like rashes, peeling skin, blisters in your mouth, throat, nose, genitals or eyes, or widespread rash with fever and swollen lymph nodes.
  • Stop immediately and contact your doctor if you experience unusual muscle aches or pains that last longer than expected, especially if you also feel unwell or have a fever. These could be signs of a serious muscle injury called rhabdomyolysis.
  • Talk to your doctor before use if you regularly consume large amounts of alcohol.
  • Talk to your doctor before use if you have or have had myasthenia (a disease causing general muscle weakness, sometimes in breathing muscles) or ocular myasthenia (a disease causing eye muscle weakness), as statins can sometimes worsen the condition or lead to its development.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Concurrent use of aluminium and magnesium reduces the effectiveness of the drug,. Consider potential interactions.
