How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will give you this medicine, and the dose depends on your pain, body size, age, and health.

Method

It is given as an injection by a healthcare professional directly into the area needing to be numbed, nearby, or into the epidural space around your spine.

Important

Your doctor will decide how much medicine you need and for how long, typically 2-10 hours for anesthesia or up to 72 hours for pain relief.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood pressure, making you feel dizzy or faint.
  • Nausea (feeling sick to your stomach).
  • Tingling or numbness (a pricking or asleep feeling).
  • Dizziness (feeling lightheaded).
  • Headache.
  • Changes in heart rate (your heart beats slower or faster than usual).
  • High blood pressure.
  • Vomiting (throwing up).
  • Difficulty urinating (hard to pee).
  • Fever or chills (feeling hot or cold and shaky).
  • Stiffness (feeling rigid).
  • Back pain.
RARE
  • Serious allergic reaction (rash, itchy skin, swelling of face/lips/tongue, trouble breathing, feeling like you might pass out).
  • Feeling restless.
  • Reduced skin sensation (less sensitive to touch).
  • Fainting.
  • Breathing difficulties (trouble breathing).
  • Low body temperature.
  • Signs of too much medicine: seizures, feeling dizzy or drunk, numb lips/mouth/tongue, trouble hearing or seeing, slurred speech, stiff muscles, shaking.
  • Heart attack (a serious heart problem).
  • Irregular heartbeat (your heart beats unevenly).
  • Nerve damage (can cause lasting problems).
  • Numbness from injection (usually temporary nerve irritation).
  • Involuntary muscle movements.
  • Horner's syndrome (droopy eyelid, small pupil, no sweating on one side of the face).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to ropivacaine or other similar local anesthetics.
  • Do not take if your blood volume is low (hypovolemia).
  • Do not inject directly into a blood vessel or into the cervix during childbirth.
  • Do not inject into an inflamed area.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, severe liver or kidney disease, or a blood disorder called acute porphyria.

  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially other pain relievers, heart medicines, antidepressants, or antibiotics, as they may interact.
  • This medicine can make you drowsy; do not drive or operate machinery until the day after your injection.
