How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine the dose based on your needs, size, age, and health condition.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection by a doctor into the area needing numbing, near it, or as an epidural injection around the spine.

Important

The doctor will determine the appropriate dose and duration of treatment. For pain relief during or after surgery, the effect can last up to 72 hours.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood pressure, which may cause dizziness or fainting.
  • Nausea.
  • Tingling or numbness.
  • Dizziness.
  • Headache.
  • Slow or fast heartbeat.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Vomiting.
  • Difficulty urinating.
  • Fever or chills (shivering).
  • Stiffness.
  • Back pain.
RARE
  • Anxiety.
  • Reduced skin sensitivity or feeling.
  • Fainting.
  • Breathing difficulties.
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia).
  • Symptoms of too much medicine, such as seizures, severe dizziness, numbness around the mouth or tongue, hearing/vision problems, speech problems, muscle stiffness, or trembling.
  • Heart attack (cardiac arrest).
  • Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia).
  • Horner's syndrome (characterized by small pupil, drooping eyelid, and lack of sweating).
  • Nerve damage (often temporary numbness due to needle/injection, but can be permanent in rare cases).
  • Involuntary muscle movements (dyskinesia).
  • Whole body numbness if too much medicine is given into the spinal fluid.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to ropivacaine hydrochloride or similar local anesthetics (like lidocaine).
  • Do not take if you have been told you have low blood volume (hypovolemia).
  • Do not use for numbing a blood vessel in a specific body area or the cervix for pain relief during childbirth.
  • The medicine should not be injected directly into a blood vessel or into an inflamed area.
  • Tell your doctor if you have poor general health, heart problems, severe liver disease, severe kidney disease, or acute porphyria.
