How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine the dose based on your pain relief needs, body size, age, and physical condition.

Method

This medicine is given as an infusion by a doctor into the part of your body that needs to be numbed, near that area, or into the epidural space around your spinal cord.

Important

Your doctor will make sure you receive the correct amount and do not get too much. This medicine is usually given for 0.5 to 6 hours, or up to 72 hours for pain relief after surgery.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension), which can make you feel dizzy or faint.
  • Nausea.
  • Tingling sensation (paresthesia).
  • Dizziness.
  • Headache.
  • Slow or fast heart rate (bradycardia, tachycardia).
  • High blood pressure (hypertension).
  • Vomiting.
  • Difficulty urinating (urinary retention).
  • Fever or chills (shivering).
  • Stiffness.
  • Back pain.
RARE
  • Restlessness.
  • Reduced skin sensitivity or feeling.
  • Fainting.
  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia).
  • Seizures, dizziness or feeling intoxicated, numbness of lips and around the mouth, tongue numbness, hearing problems, vision problems, speech problems, muscle stiffness, and trembling.
  • Heart attack (cardiac arrest).
  • Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia).
  • Horner's syndrome (characterized by small pupil, drooping eyelid, and lack of sweating on one side of the face).
  • Numbness due to nerve irritation from the needle or injection, usually temporary.
  • Involuntary muscle movements (dyskinesia).
  • Nerve damage, which can be permanent in rare cases.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to ropivacaine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to other local anesthetics like lidocaine or bupivacaine.
  • Do not use if you have been told your blood volume is low (hypovolemia).
  • This medicine must not be injected directly into a blood vessel.
  • Do not use this medicine in an inflamed area.

  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy and affect your reactions. Do not drive or operate machinery on the same day you receive it.
  • Tell your doctor if you have any serious health conditions like heart, liver, or kidney problems, or a rare blood disorder called acute porphyria, as your dose might need to be adjusted.
  • If you think you are having an allergic reaction, tell your doctor or nurse immediately.
