How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the right dose for you, usually 1 to 2 grams once a day. For severe infections, up to 4 grams once a day may be given.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection into a muscle by a doctor or nurse. It contains lidocaine to reduce pain from the injection.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 4 grams. For children, the maximum dose depends on their weight, as determined by the doctor, but will not exceed 4 grams.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Changes in blood tests (e.g., in white blood cells or platelets).
  • Loose stools or diarrhea.
  • Changes in liver function tests.
  • Rash.
RARE
  • Fungal infections (e.g., thrush, genital fungal infections).
  • Decreased white or red blood cells.
  • Blood clotting disorders, with symptoms such as easy bruising, joint pain, and swelling.
  • Headache.
  • Dizziness.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Itching, hives, and swelling.
  • Injection site reactions like pain, burning, blisters, bruises, redness, irritation, hardening, or swelling.
  • Fever.
  • Chills.
  • Abnormal kidney function tests (increased blood creatinine).
  • Inflammation of the large intestine (colitis) with bloody or slimy diarrhea, stomach pain, and fever.
  • Breathing difficulties (bronchospasm).
  • Blood or sugar in urine.
  • General swelling (fluid retention in the body).
  • Injection site infection.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to ceftriaxone, lidocaine, penicillin, or similar antibiotics.
  • Do not take if you have severe heart problems (low blood pressure, slow heartbeat).
  • Do not give to premature babies or newborns under 28 days old if they have certain blood problems or jaundice, or if they are receiving calcium injections.
