How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 10 mg. If you take propranolol or have kidney/liver problems, your doctor might prescribe a 5 mg dose.

Method

Take the tablet whole with liquid by mouth as soon as a migraine headache starts. Do not use it to prevent an attack.

Important

Do not take more than two doses in 24 hours. Always wait at least two hours between doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Tingling (pins and needles), headache, reduced skin sensitivity, reduced mental sharpness, trembling.
  • Fast or irregular heartbeats (palpitations), very fast heartbeats (tachycardia).
  • Flushing (short-term facial redness), hot flashes, sweating.
  • Uncomfortable feeling in the throat, shortness of breath.
  • Nausea, dry mouth, vomiting, diarrhea.
  • Heavy feeling in some parts of the body.
  • Stomach or chest pain.
RARE
  • Bad taste in mouth.
  • Clumsy walking, lightheadedness, dizziness, blurred vision.
  • Confusion, insomnia, nervousness.
  • High blood pressure, thirst, indigestion.
  • Rash, itching, and hives; swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat that may cause breathing or swallowing difficulties (angioedema).
  • Neck pain, feeling of tightness in parts of the body, stiffness, muscle weakness.
  • Changes in heart rhythm or rate (arrhythmia), abnormal heart electrical activity (ECG).
  • Facial pain, muscle pain.
  • Fainting.
  • Wheezing.
  • Allergic reaction; sudden life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
  • Stroke (more common in people with risk factors like high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, heart disease in the family).
  • Slow heart rate (bradycardia).
  • Heart attack, spasms in the heart's blood vessels (more common in people with risk factors for cardiovascular disease).
  • Serotonin syndrome (can cause unconsciousness, unstable blood pressure, very high body temperature, poor muscle coordination, anxiety, and hallucinations).
  • Severe skin peeling, possibly with fever (toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Convulsions (seizures).
  • Constriction of blood vessels in the limbs, causing coldness and numbness in hands and feet.
  • Spasms in the blood vessels of the large intestine, which can cause abdominal pain.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to rizatriptan benzoate, menthol, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, or a history of heart attack, chest pain, stroke, or mini-stroke.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are currently taking MAO inhibitors (for depression) or if it has been less than two weeks since you stopped taking them.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are taking other migraine medicines like ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, methysergide, sumatriptan, naratriptan, or zolmitriptan.

  • Using this medicine too often can lead to chronic headaches. Talk to your doctor if this happens.
  • This medicine may make you feel sleepy or dizzy. Do not drive or use machines if you feel this way.
