How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 10 mg. If you are taking propranolol or have kidney or liver problems, you should take a 5 mg dose.

Method

Place the tablet on your tongue; it will dissolve and can be swallowed with saliva, or with a drink. This is useful if you don't have water or if water makes you feel sick.

Important

Do not take more than two doses within 24 hours, and wait at least two hours between doses.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness
  • Tingling sensation, headache, reduced skin sensitivity, reduced mental sharpness, trembling
  • Fast or irregular heartbeats (palpitations), very fast heartbeats (tachycardia)
  • Flushing (temporary facial redness), hot flashes, sweating
  • Discomfort in the throat, shortness of breath
  • Nausea, dry mouth, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Heavy feeling in some body parts
  • Stomach or chest pain
RARE
  • Bad taste in mouth
  • Clumsy walking, light-headedness, spinning sensation (vertigo), blurred vision
  • Confusion, sleeplessness, nervousness
  • High blood pressure, thirst, indigestion
  • Rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat (angioedema), which can cause breathing or swallowing difficulties
  • Neck pain, tightness in some body parts, stiffness, muscle weakness
  • Changes in heart rhythm or rate (arrhythmia), abnormal ECG (heart test results)
  • Facial pain, muscle pain
  • Fainting
  • Wheezing
  • Allergic reactions (hypersensitivity), sudden life-threatening allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
  • Stroke (brain damage due to blood clot or bleed), especially if you have heart or blood vessel disease risk factors
  • Slow heart rate
  • Heart attack, spasms of the heart's blood vessels (especially if you have heart or blood vessel disease risk factors)
  • Serotonin syndrome (symptoms like being unconscious, unstable blood pressure, very high body temperature, lack of muscle coordination, anxiety, and seeing or hearing things that aren't there)
  • Severe skin peeling with fever (toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Convulsions (seizures)
  • Blood vessel spasms in the limbs, including coldness and numbness in hands and feet
  • Blood vessel spasms in the large intestine, which can cause abdominal pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to rizatriptan benzoate, menthol, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure.
  • Do not use if you have or have had heart disease, including a heart attack or chest pain.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Do not use if you have had a stroke or a mini-stroke (TIA).

  • Do not use if you have problems with blood clots in your arteries (peripheral vascular disease).
  • Do not use if you are currently taking or have recently stopped (within 2 weeks) certain antidepressants (MAO inhibitors) or an antibiotic called linezolid.
  • Do not use if you are currently taking ergotamine-type medicines for migraine.
  • Do not use if you are taking other 'triptan' medicines for migraine, such as sumatriptan or zolmitriptan.
  • Using this medicine too often can cause chronic headaches. Talk to your doctor if this happens.
  • This medicine can make you feel sleepy or dizzy, so do not drive or use machines if you feel this way.
