How to Use

Dosage

Typically, one 10 mg tablet once a day. For treating blood clots after 6 months, your doctor may prescribe one 10 mg or 20 mg tablet once daily.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food. If you have trouble swallowing, crush the tablet and mix it with water or applesauce, then take it right away.

Important

Do not take more than one dose per day. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. Follow your doctor's instructions.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling pale, weak, or short of breath because of fewer red blood cells.
  • Bleeding: from stomach or gut, urinary tract, genitals (like blood in urine, heavy periods), nose, or gums.
  • Bleeding in the eye (including the white part).
  • Bruises or bleeding under the skin.
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Bleeding after surgery or from a wound.
  • Swelling or pain in arms or legs.
  • Kidney problems (seen in lab tests).
  • Fever.
  • Stomach pain, upset stomach, feeling sick or throwing up, constipation, or diarrhea.
  • Low blood pressure (may make you feel dizzy or faint when standing up).
  • Headache, dizziness, general weakness or tiredness.
  • Rash, itchy skin.
  • Higher levels of some liver enzymes (seen in blood tests).
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or inside the head.
  • Bleeding into a joint causing pain and swelling.
  • Low number of platelets (cells that help blood clot).
  • Allergic reactions, including allergic skin rashes.
  • Liver problems (seen in lab tests).
  • Higher levels of bilirubin, pancreatic/liver enzymes, or platelets (seen in blood tests).
  • Fainting.
  • Feeling generally unwell.
  • Fast heart rate.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Hives (itchy rash).
  • Bleeding in muscles.
  • Problems with bile flow (cholestasis), liver inflammation or damage (hepatitis).
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice).
  • Swelling in one area.
  • Blood collecting in the groin (hematoma) or problems after heart procedures.
  • Lung inflammation caused by a type of white blood cell (eosinophilic lung inflammation).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to rivaroxaban or any other ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have active bleeding or a condition that greatly increases your risk of serious bleeding (like a stomach ulcer, or recent brain or eye surgery).
  • Do not use if you are taking other blood thinners, unless your doctor tells you to as part of a treatment change or for a catheter flush.
  • Do not use if you have liver disease that increases your bleeding risk.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, very high blood pressure that isn't controlled, stomach or bowel issues that might bleed, eye problems affecting blood vessels, a lung disease with pus, a previous lung bleed, an artificial heart valve, or a condition called antiphospholipid syndrome.
  • Always tell your doctor about all other medicines you take, as some can change how Rivaxa works.
  • Inform your doctor if you need surgery, especially if it involves spinal injections or a catheter in your spine.
