How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start you on a low dose and gradually increase it based on how you respond.

Method

Take capsules whole with liquid, once in the morning and once in the evening, with food. Do not open or crush them.

Important

The highest daily dose is 6 mg, taken twice a day (12 mg total).

  • Changes in how your liver works

  • High blood pressure
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Seeing things that are not real (hallucinations)
  • Heart rhythm problems (like a fast or very slow heartbeat)
  • Bleeding in your stomach or gut (seen as blood in your stool or vomit)
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (causing severe upper stomach pain, often with nausea or vomiting)
  • Severe vomiting that can tear the tube connecting your mouth to your stomach (esophagus)
  • Dehydration (losing too much body fluid)
  • Liver problems (yellow skin/eyes, dark urine, unexplained nausea/vomiting, tiredness, loss of appetite)
  • Aggression or restlessness
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Pisa syndrome (involuntary muscle contractions causing abnormal bending of the body and head to one side)
  • Hyperactivity

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to rivastigmine or any of its ingredients, or if you have had an allergic skin reaction to rivastigmine before.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had heart problems, like an irregular or slow heartbeat.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had stomach ulcers.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had trouble urinating.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had seizures.

  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had kidney or liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have tremors.
  • Tell your doctor if you are very underweight.
  • Tell your doctor if you have stomach issues like nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, as long-lasting symptoms can lead to dehydration (loss of too much body fluid).
  • If you have not taken Rivastigmin Orion for more than three days, do not take the next dose until you have talked to your doctor.
  • This medicine is not for children or teenagers with Alzheimer's disease.
  • If you need surgery, tell your doctor you are taking Rivastigmin Orion before you get anesthesia, as it might make some muscle relaxants work too strongly.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Increases the risk of cardiac conduction disorders, such as bradycardia. May exacerbate existing COPD. Note adverse effects affecting the gastrointestinal tract with capsule preparations. Consider potential interactions. Avoid concomitant use of anticholinergic medicines. (updated 18.3.2024)
