How to Use

Dosage

Treatment usually starts with a low dose, which your doctor will gradually increase.

Method

Take Rivastigmin Orion capsules twice a day, in the morning and in the evening, with food. Swallow the capsules whole with liquid. Do not open or crush them.

Important

Do not take more than 12 mg per day (6 mg twice a day).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Stomach problems like feeling sick (nausea), throwing up (vomiting), or diarrhea
  • Anxiety
  • Sweating
  • Headache
  • Heartburn
  • Weight loss
  • Stomach pain
  • Agitation or restlessness
  • Feeling tired or weak
  • General feeling of being unwell
  • Tremors (shaking)
  • Confusion
  • Nightmares
  • Fainting
  • Accidental falls
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Increased saliva and dehydration (losing too much body fluid)
  • Abnormally slow or uncontrolled movements
  • Worsening of Parkinson's disease symptoms, like muscle stiffness, difficulty moving, or muscle weakness
  • Fever
  • Severe confusion
  • Urinary incontinence (not being able to control urine)
RARE
  • Feeling very sad (depression)
  • Insomnia (severe sleep problems)
  • Changes in how your liver works, possibly seen as yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, or feeling sick without reason
  • Chest pain
  • Skin rash, itching
  • Seizures (fits)
  • Stomach or gut ulcers
  • High blood pressure
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real)
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Bleeding in the stomach or gut (seen as blood in your poop or vomit)
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (severe upper stomach pain, often with nausea or vomiting)
  • Severe vomiting that can cause tearing of the tube leading to the stomach (esophagus)
  • Dehydration (loss of too much body fluid)
  • Aggressiveness
  • Increased restlessness or hyperactivity
  • Pisa syndrome (body and head bending to one side due to involuntary muscle contractions)
  • Allergic skin reaction at the application site (e.g., blisters or skin inflammation), seen with patches but may occur with capsules

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to rivastigmine or any other ingredients, or if you have had an allergic skin reaction to rivastigmine before.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had heart problems, like an irregular or slow heartbeat.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had stomach ulcers, severe nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. These can lead to dehydration.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had difficulty urinating.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had seizures (fits).

  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had kidney or liver problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you are very underweight or have tremors.
  • If you have not taken Rivastigmin Orion for more than three days, do not take the next dose until you have talked to your doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Increases the risk of cardiac conduction disorders, such as bradycardia. May exacerbate existing COPD. Note adverse effects affecting the gastrointestinal tract with capsule preparations. Consider potential interactions. Avoid concomitant use of anticholinergic medicines. (updated 18.3.2024)
