How to Use

Dosage

For the first 3 weeks: one 15 mg capsule twice a day. After that: one 20 mg capsule once a day. If you have kidney disease, your doctor might reduce the dose to one 15 mg capsule once a day after three weeks.

Method

Take the capsule with food and swallow it with water. If swallowing is difficult, the capsule's content can be mixed with water or apple puree right before taking.

Important

Initially, no more than two 15 mg capsules per day; later, no more than one 20 mg capsule per day (or one 15 mg capsule for kidney disease).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Decrease in red blood cells, causing pale skin, weakness, or shortness of breath.
  • Bleeding in the stomach or intestines, urinary tract or genitals (including blood in urine and heavy menstrual bleeding), nosebleeds, or gum bleeding.
  • Eye bleeding (including in the whites of the eyes).
  • Bleeding into tissue or body cavity (bruising).
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Bleeding on or under the skin.
  • Bleeding after surgery.
  • Oozing of blood or fluid from a surgical wound.
  • Swelling in limbs.
  • Limb pain.
  • Kidney problems (can be seen in tests).
  • Fever.
  • Stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea.
  • Low blood pressure (causing dizziness or fainting when standing up).
  • General weakness and tiredness, headache, dizziness.
  • Rash, itchy skin.
  • Increased liver enzymes in blood tests.
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or inside the head.
  • Bleeding into a joint, causing pain and swelling.
  • Low platelet count (platelets help blood clot).
  • Allergic reactions, including allergic skin reactions.
  • Liver problems (can be seen in tests).
  • Blood tests may show increased bilirubin, some pancreatic or liver enzymes, or platelet count.
  • Fainting.
  • Feeling unwell.
  • Fast heartbeat.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Hives.
  • Bleeding into a muscle.
  • Bile flow obstruction or liver inflammation (including liver damage).
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).
  • Local swelling.
  • Blood collection in the groin after a heart procedure (pseudoaneurysm).
  • Eosinophil accumulation, a type of white blood cell, causing lung inflammation (eosinophilic pneumonia).
  • Kidney failure after severe bleeding.
  • Bleeding in the kidney, sometimes with blood in urine, leading to kidney problems (anticoagulant-related nephropathy).
  • Increased pressure in leg or arm muscles after bleeding, causing pain, swelling, altered sensation, numbness, or paralysis (compartment syndrome after bleeding).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to rivaroxaban or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have active or heavy bleeding.
  • Do not take if you have a condition that increases your risk of severe bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer, brain injury, or recent brain/eye surgery).
  • Do not take other blood-thinning medicines at the same time, unless your doctor has specifically instructed you to (e.g., when switching medicines or flushing a catheter).
  • Do not take if you have a liver disease that increases your risk of bleeding.

  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Use reliable contraception during treatment.
  • Be especially careful if you have severe kidney disease, as it can affect how the medicine works.
  • Be careful if you have very high blood pressure that is not controlled by medication.
  • Tell your doctor if you are having surgery, especially if it involves a spinal injection or catheter, and follow instructions precisely for taking the medicine before and after the procedure.
  • If you experience numbness or weakness in your legs, or bowel/bladder problems after anesthesia, contact your doctor immediately.
