How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is one 10 mg capsule once a day.

Method

Take the capsule whole with water, with or without food, at the same time each day. If you have trouble swallowing, you can mix the capsule contents with water or apple sauce right before taking it.

Important

Do not take more than your doctor prescribed. Taking too much increases the risk of bleeding.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling pale, weak, or short of breath due to fewer red blood cells.
  • Bleeding in the stomach, gut, urinary tract, genitals (like blood in urine or heavy periods), nosebleeds, gum bleeding, eye bleeding, bruising under the skin, coughing up blood, or bleeding from a wound after surgery.
  • Swelling or pain in arms or legs.
  • Changes in how well your kidneys work (shown in tests).
  • Fever.
  • Stomach ache, indigestion, feeling or being sick, constipation, or diarrhea.
  • Low blood pressure (may make you feel dizzy or faint when standing up).
  • Reduced strength and energy (weakness, tiredness), headache, dizziness.
  • Skin rash or itching.
  • Blood tests showing higher levels of some liver enzymes.
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or inside the head, or bleeding into a joint causing pain and swelling.
  • Low number of platelets (cells that help blood clot).
  • Allergic reactions, including skin reactions.
  • Liver problems (shown in tests), or blood tests showing changes in bilirubin, pancreatic/liver enzymes, or platelet count.
  • Fainting or generally feeling unwell.
  • Faster heartbeat.
  • Dry mouth or hives.
  • Bleeding into a muscle.
  • Problems with bile flow (cholestasis), or liver inflammation (hepatitis) including liver damage, or yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice).
  • Local swelling.
  • Blood collection (hematoma) in the groin, which can be a complication after heart procedures where a catheter is inserted into an artery in the leg (pseudoaneurysm).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to rivaroxaban or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not take if you are bleeding heavily or have a medical condition that increases your risk of serious bleeding (like a stomach ulcer, recent brain or eye surgery, or liver disease).
  • Do not take if you are already using other blood-thinning medicines, unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you can get pregnant, use reliable birth control while taking this medicine.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children and teenagers under 18 years of age.

  • If you need surgery, it's very important to follow your doctor's instructions for taking this medicine before and after. If you get numbness, weakness, or problems with bowels/bladder in your legs after a spinal injection or catheter, tell your doctor right away.

Category C
