How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is one 10 mg capsule once a day.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with water, with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. If you have trouble swallowing, you can mix the capsule contents with water or applesauce just before taking it.

Important

Do not take more than one 10 mg capsule per day as prescribed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Reduced red blood cells, which can make you look pale, feel weak, or short of breath.
  • Bleeding in the stomach, intestines, urinary or genital areas (including blood in urine or heavy periods), nosebleeds, or bleeding gums.
  • Eye bleeding (including in the whites of your eyes).
  • Bleeding into tissues or body cavities (like a bruise).
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Bleeding from or under the skin.
  • Bleeding after surgery or fluid leaking from a surgical wound.
  • Swelling or pain in your arms or legs.
  • Kidney problems (may be seen in blood tests).
  • Fever.
  • Abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea.
  • Low blood pressure, which can make you feel dizzy or faint when standing up.
  • Feeling weak or tired, headache, or dizziness.
  • Rash or itchy skin.
  • Increased liver enzymes in blood tests.
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or inside the head (symptoms like severe headache, weakness on one side, vomiting, seizures, decreased consciousness, stiff neck – seek immediate medical help).
  • Severe or prolonged bleeding that is hard to stop.
  • Unusual weakness, paleness, dizziness, headache, unexplained swelling, shortness of breath, chest pain, or angina pectoris.
  • Severe skin reactions such as spreading rash, blisters, or sores in the mouth or eyes (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome or DRESS syndrome).
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing, hives, breathing problems, sudden drop in blood pressure, anaphylactic shock).
  • Bleeding into a joint, causing pain and swelling.
  • Low number of blood platelets (cells that help blood clot).
  • Liver function problems or yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice), possibly with inflammation of the liver (hepatitis).
  • Fainting, feeling generally unwell, fast heartbeat, dry mouth, or hives.
  • Bleeding into a muscle.
  • Accumulation of certain white blood cells (eosinophils) causing lung inflammation.
  • Kidney failure after severe bleeding, or bleeding in the kidney that causes it to not work properly.
  • Increased pressure in arm or leg muscles after bleeding, leading to pain, swelling, numbness, or paralysis (compartment syndrome).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to rivaroxaban or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe bleeding or a condition that increases your risk of serious bleeding, such as a stomach ulcer or recent brain/eye surgery.
  • Do not take if you are taking other medicines to prevent blood clotting, unless your doctor tells you to.
  • Do not take if you have a liver disease that increases your risk of bleeding.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Use effective birth control while taking this medicine if you could become pregnant.

  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, bleeding disorders, very high blood pressure that is not controlled, stomach or bowel diseases (like ulcers or inflammation), eye problems (retinopathy), lung problems (like widened airways or past lung bleeding), or an artificial heart valve.
  • This medicine is not recommended for people under 18 years of age.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness or fainting. Do not drive or use machines if you experience these symptoms.
